YogenFruz: From Toronto to Tarzana

When the first wave of the frozen yogurt phenom hit in the mid-80s, this LAister was a Torontonian; that was when and where the newest froyo franchise to hit the City of Angels today was born. YogenFruz started in Toronto in 1986, and has just opened their second LA location in Tarzana. To celebrate, all weekend long the new store will have a "Buy One-Get One Free" promotion going on, so grab a friend and head into the Valley to see what makes YogenFruz different from other frozen yogurt.

What's unique about their offerings is their signature "Blend It" style frozen yogurt. Basically they blend in your choice of flash-frozen fresh fruit chunks into your serving of either low-fat, non-fat, or no-sugar added yogurt right there, which means you're getting the flavor you want made right before your eyes. Having the fresh fruit worked in on the spot makes the yogurt taste and feel less processed and more natural; it's definitely something you can pick up through the texture and on the palate. Their low fat yogurt has a coy creaminess that is often missing from other froyo shops' flavors and made for the perfect backdrop to embrace chunks of chilly peaches and raspberries. They also have a house soft serve "tart" flavor that is more satisfying than, say, Pinkberry's tart flavor--it, too, has a pleasant creaminess and a softness with just the right sour bite. You can "Top It" with a wide variety of toppings.
