After eleven years in business, Real Food Daily is now a staple for Southland health nuts. It's one of the few places in LA that specializes exclusively in creating Vegan food. The West Hollywood location is not only Vegan but Kosher-certified. Most people cringe at either word--thinking somehow healthy food can't be fun. RFD is here to prove them wrong.

When you first glance at the menu, you'll be surprised to see items like Total Reuben, TV Dinner and Burrito Supreme alongside Lentil-Walnut Pate, Hummus & Pita and BBQ Tofu Chop. The chefs at Real Food cater to both the raw crowd and the reformed carnivores that have switched palettes for health reasons. Both camps will be happy to hear that RFD's veggie-fied dishes are often better than the meaty, cheesy, cholesterol-ladden alternatives.

LAist advises first-time RFD-goers to stick with the Mexican dishes. Our favorite item on the menu is the Black Bean Tostada. It's essentially an enormous mixed green salad on a bed of corn tortillas, spanish rice, black beans and guacamole. The Real Food Bargain plate is also worthy of a sampling. It's a balanced meal of raw veggies served with brown rice, soup and corn bread.

The only items we recommend skipping are the Lentil-Walnut Paté and Hummus starters. The paté is rather bland, and the wheat-free rice sesame crackers only compound that fact. We tried the hummus plate twice and it seems to be either too pasty or too lemony. Aside from those two items, the menu is formidable.

Make sure you save room for dessert. The coconut cream pie (pictured) is actually better than the real thing. And yes, somehow it's Vegan. We're convinced that founder Ann Gentry must have made a deal with the devil to create this particular menu item. But, we're grateful for the sacrifice. Gentry was the former personal chef of Danny DeVito, believe it or not... and out of that gig, RFD was born.

There are two locations. Our favorite is the newly-redecorated West Hollywood location. If you're on the West Side, stop by the original RFD on Santa Monica Blvd., just a few blocks from the ocean. Regardless of the spot, you'll be glad you gave this healthy and unusually tasty Vegan cuisine a try.
