Drinking the Pink

We've confessed before that while we like wine, we know little about it. When we were recently given the opportunity to sample a new White Shiraz, we we perplexed; how can a shiraz--our favorite red of late--be white? Really, it's neither. It's exactly what you get when you put red with white, color-wise. It's pink.

The Little Penguin line of Australian wines made their debut last summer, and this summer they're touting the White Shiraz as the hottest alternative to both traditional cocktails and to wine snobbery. The Pink Penguin, as its nicknamed, is said to be best paired with Asian dishes, or served as an apertif. We paired it with a glass and some friends. We know, as pictured above, that we even went so far as to use the wrong kind of glass, but we live in a house where wine glasses mysteriously disappear, and every Christmas we forget to add "wine glasses" to the wish list. If the Pink Penguin won't turn his beak down at wine ignorance, then our little juice glasses should be a-ok. The reactions to the White Shiraz were varied. One taster took a sip and was satisfied with that, noting that she was reminded of a dessert wine and the flavor smacked of cough medicine, which is probably thanks to the cherry flavor the wine has. Another taster drank hers down just fine, but we suspect she is the kind of wine drinker who will drink anything. We thought it was decent, for our first pink wine--definitely fruity, defnitely sweet, and closer to a white than a red in body and smoothness. Incidentally, we took the Little Penguin's wine personality test, and found out we were a Chardonnay. Funny, we don't care much for Chardonnay. Good thing the Little Penguin is a wine maker that doesn't take themselves seriously; we don't take ourselves seriously as wine drinkers. And the Pink Penguin White Shiraz? Not for everyone. But drinkable.
