  • People from OJ Simpson's past, such as Ron Goldman's father Fred, have already spoken out in praise of yesterday's guilty verdict in his Las Vegas trial. Some feel the jury was swayed by prior knowledge of Simpson and his legal battles and that the conviction stemmed from a desire to "make up for" his being acquitted of murder more than ten years ago.
  • The search resumed this morning in the waters near the LA harbor for the missing brother of local politicians Loretta and Linda Sanchez. He and his girlfriend left Long Beach Wednesday night and were headed to Catalina.
  • A pedestrian was injured by a hit and run driver at around 2:40 this morning in Hollywood. The victim is expected to fully recover, and police are looking for the driver of the light-colored Acura who struck him.
  • It was a close call in Newport Beach today when a three-year-old boy was stranded on a 40-foot-high cliff following the near-drowning of his relative, a 20-year-old fisherman who was pulled into the water. Rescuers helped the little boy down to safety.
  • Police are now calling the deaths of a Simi Valley couple last year a homicide, and not a traffic accident. The bodies of the Callenders were found at the bottom of a ravine in Malibu just over a year ago, and one month after they were initially reported as missing.
  • The "Bus Pass Scam" pulled off by a driver has prompted the MTA to conduct an audit and to look into employee accountability.
  • 55-year-old Los Angeles-based fashion designer Eletra Casadei died late last month. She was best known for designing affordable copies of celebrities' high fashion gowns, as well as for her work on popular television shows of the 1980s like Dynasty and The Golden Girls
You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
