What started off as some goofing off on the escalators at the Hollywood & Highland shopping complex turned deadly last night, when an unnamed man fell to his death.

He had been trying to slide down the bannister of one of the upper escalators when he reportedly lost his balance and fell several stories onto another escalator below. The fall caused a severe head injury, and the man was pronounced dead at the hospital. It is estimated that the deceased man is in his twenties.

According to his companions last night, the man had been drinking, which is being attributed as the cause of his behavior and his accident. In fact, according to the San Jose Mercury News, "Los Angeles police Officer J. Boyer says the victim's friends told officials investigating the Saturday night incident at the Hollywood and Highland Center that the man "had been drinking quite a bit."

For those among us who think it would take a lot of liquor to get us to hang out at the shopping "destination" that is Hollywood & Highland, let this serve as a lesson that even that strategy can prove fatal.
