TV Junkie: Weekend Edition - Louis CK!!
The incredible Louis CK debuts his one hour special "Chewed Up" on Showtime Saturday night at 11pm. Yes, last weekend we told you to check out Chris Rock's special and this one is even better. Louis CK writes a lot of Rock's material, and has written for Letterman, Conan, "SNL", and created his own (critically acclaimed but short-lived) show on HBO "Lucky Louie".
We were sent a screener of "Chewed Up", and our viewing party enjoyed it very much. CK is pretty raw and despite exploring the origin and usage of some of our deadlier insults (we're talking the worst of the racist and sexist ones), the logic and realism he frames his humor in illustrates how ridiculous the power of words is. Particularly hilarious are CK's anecdotes about fatherhood, aging, and keeping a marriage going - this is the staple of comedy and CK is a master at making these standards both incredibly real and incredibly funny. What is refreshing about this special after watching Rock's is that CK's presentation is straightforward, no frills, a guy in a t-shirt on a plain stage - no sets or weird lights, no (obvious) editing and intercutting, just a feeling of genuine spontaneity. There will be nothing funnier on TV this weekend. Louis CK: Saturday @ 11pm on Showtime, Sunday @ 11pm on Showtime Too
The TV Junkie plan: Tonight - baseball, "The Ex List" (we've heard good things); "The Soup"; Kimmel; Saturday - baseball, "The Dish"; Louis CK; Sunday - "True Blood", "Mad Men"
