TV Junkie: JR Turns 80; Emmys Viewership Falls; 'Walking Dead' Sneak Peek
Today is Larry Hagman's 80th birthday. The man is an icon for both his comedic ("I Dream of Jeannie") and dramatic ("Dallas") work and there is an in-depth interview with him at the Archive of American Television but check out the excerpt above. [Also, a big Happy Birthday to Bill Murray on his 61st!]
Despite all the hype from Sunday night, including a flurry of positive-spin Tweets from the likes of The Hollywood Reporter and other outlets over the past couple days, viewership of the Emmy awards actually dropped almost 10% from the previous year - it did not "stay steady" or have a "modest increase" per the tweets we saw. Could the Emmys have been worse? Yes, but that doesn't mean what we got was must-watch television that satisfied either populist or critical acclaim.
If you can't make it to the Paley Center for tonight's tribute to Fox's "American Dad" you can watch it live online via Hulu starting at 7:30pm. Chris Hardwick (aka @nerdist) will host/interview/moderate a panel of the "American Dad" team that includes show creator Seth MacFarlane.
There's a new episode of "Free Agents" (NBC @ 8:30pm) and we've got a clip of Hank Azaria (at the end of this post) discussing his first date the last time he became a free agent.
More Video! AMC gave us another "Walking Dead" behind-the-scenes clip to check out (at the end of this post) - this time it's costuming the zombie walkers. The series returns on October 16th.
I stumbled across these awesome "Adventure Time" t-shirts at Threadless - I don't know if they are official merchandise because the artwork is not consistent but as a fanboy I could care less!
"Modern Family" returns with an hour-long season premiere tonight (9pm on ABC) after its triumphant sweep at the Emmys. All the people I've met from that show are elated, humble, and appreciative of the show's success. Props to co-creator Steve Levitan who was gracious about their then-Emmy nominations when I talked to him at the Just for Laughs festival in July. Also, series writer Danny Zuker is a hilarious follow on Twitter @DannyZuker.
Quick Assessment: Last night's "New Girl" (Fox) was better than Monday's "2 Broke Girls" (CBS) but both had elements of obnoxiousness that they would be wise to abandon.
