Photos: The Big Parade Takes on L.A.'s Public Staircases

Before you
Dear reader, we're asking you to help us keep local news available for all. Your tax-deductible financial support keeps our stories free to read, instead of hidden behind paywalls. We believe when reliable local reporting is widely available, the entire community benefits. Thank you for investing in your neighborhood.

Day one of The Big Parade has gone and past, but there's still a lot more ground to cover. The two-day 35-mile urban hike that began Saturday morning in downtown (and pausing last night with camping in Silver Lake) will today go from the Music Box Stairs in Silver Lake at 8 a.m. to the Hollywood Sign. That's a 17.6 miles journey over some 50 public staircases. Whew!

It may seem like a daunting task, but for organizer Dan Koeppel, The Big Parade is not about racing or being hardcore by doing it from the start to end. Rather, it's about meeting new people and exploring a part of Los Angeles many don't know about. You can join in and leave at any point--just plan ahead if you do by checking out the map and looking at the timetable.

And that's exactly what we did on Saturday, joining in for the Echo Park loop. A small selection of photos from that are above.
