The weather wasn't exactly ideal on Sunday as the stars walked down the red carpet for the 2017 Oscars; a canopy was stretched over the path to protect the glamorous from the constant assault of overcast skies.

The gloom did little to tamp down the pomp of the pageantry, however. The aura of elegance was in full display. The fashion, for the most part, veered towards the lean and classical. The tuxedos were dark and slim, and the gowns were flowing and understated. Some standouts include Riz Ahmed's suit, which has the most electric shade of midnight blue we've ever seen, as well as Ruth Negga's dress, which toed the line between tradition and the unexpected. Also, Kirsten Dunst caught our attention with a strikingly minimal look.

As far as off-the-wall getups (re: Bjork's swan dress) there isn't much to report back so far. Though Janelle Monae did show up in a dazzling dress that looks like some sort of celestial phenomenon. Plus, Jackie Chan stepped out with animal dolls for some reason. Are carnival prizes the new hot accessory? Let's make it happen.

We'll be updating this gallery as more people show up to the red carpet.

[Update: 8:09 p.m.] It turns out those dolls were used to promote UNICEF, so they were for a good cause. Here's Chan talking about his portable pals.
