THEATRE*: Once on This Island is a mythical musical set in the French Antilles based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy. In the play, Ti Moon must prove to her gods that love is stronger than death. It examines issues of race and class along the way, through some really great music. The two-week run at UCLA’s Freud Playhouse begins tonight at 8 pm.
LEARNING: There’s an Incubator MeetUp and networking event at Blankspaces tonight. Featured speakers are Megan Crane, author of Frenemies, and Liza Palmer, author of Conversations with the Fat Girl, who’ll give a workshop on “How to Get Published.” This is a chance to meet other professional freelancers and entrepreneurs to network, discuss freelancers' issues and barter. The event starts at 7 pm.
FOOD: The only thing more hyped lately than presidential conventions or hurricane Gustav is the return of Brenda and Kelly to 90210. The Peach Pit’s back, too, and Kokomo Café on Beverly got the part as the hangout for the new generation from West Beverly High School. To celebrate the occasion, Kokomo Café added a few food items inspired by 90210 during the month of September, including “Nat Your Average Smoothie” and the “90210 Breakfast.” Today only, the café will be serving u complimentary items* from its 90210 between 2-4 pm (until supplies last.).
SONGWRITING SHOWCASE: The Mountain Stage NewSong Contest is a premier showcases for emerging, performing songwriters in all genres, and it’s now in its 7th year. Tonight the Western regionals will be held at The Mint, beginning at 8 pm. During the evening, 10 finalists will perform their original material and compete for the chance to advance to the international contest finals held later in the year.
