Pencil This In: An Erotic Lit Reading, David Fincher at LACMA, an Etsy Night, Lavender Diamond and Youngblood Hawke

Here's what's happening in LA tonight: an evening of erotic readings; an Etsy monster craft night at CAFAM; an Open Screen Night at the Echo Park Film Center; an evening with David Fincher; and music by Youngblood Hawke at the Troub and another show with Lavender Diamond, Charlene Yi and Willie Watson (Old Crow Medicine Show). CAFAM hosts an Etsy Meet & Make craft night tonight at 7 pm. Mark Montano and Holly Jerger guide attendees on marking Monsters, Dolls & Other Creatures. Create a doll or character from a variety of remnant fabrics, buttons, beads or other materials. Basic sewing supplies and glue will be available but bring your own materials to customize the doll. Admission: $7/ Free for CAFAM Members (includes materials, drinks, and snacks). RSVP required:

The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra welcomes author Jane Hamilton (The Book of Ruth) for the latest installment of its Westside Connections concerts tonight at 7:30 pm at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica. The concert explores the relationshp between “Music & Story,” featuring commentary by Hamilton. Also on the program is Osvaldo Golijov’s Tenebrae featuring soprano Stacey Tappan and Brahms’s G major Sextet. Tickets: $50.

Coagula Curatorial presents an Erotic Literature Reading & Performance tonight at 7:30 pm. The evening is being held in conjunction with the gallery’s Lust Letters exhibition, and features artist Tim Youd performing his rendition of excerpts from Anais Nin's erotic writings; curator Joan Aarestad discussing Eroticism in Art: A Woman's View and writer Barbara Kraft reads from her recent E-Book Anais Nin: The Last Days.

Film Independent at LACMA presents An Evening with David Fincher tonight at 7:30 pm. Fincher most recently served as executive producer and directed the first two episodes of Netflix’s House of Cards. Those first two episodes are being screened tonight along with an extended conversation with Fincher. Tickets: $20 general admission. Only standby tickets available and are not guaranteed. The line forms at 6:30 pm at the Hammer Building Ticket Office.

There are a couple shows that piqued our interest tonight: Youngblood Hawke headlines a sold-out Troubadour tonight with The Mowgli's and Zak Waters. Tonight at 8 pm. Tickets: $15 (or whatever you can get from your favorite scalper). Not sold out (yet) is Lavender Diamond at The Echoplex tonight at 8 pm with Charlyne Yi and Willie Watson (Old Crow Medicine Show). Tickets: $11-$13. This show is 18+.

The 2013 Taste of Downtown continues tonight in Long Beach’s East Village Arts District (on 1st Street between Linden and Elm Avenue) from 6-9 pm. Sample small portions of local restaurants’ signature dishes and live music performed by Moonsville Collective. $1 per ticket at the door. (Most dishes cost $1-$4 tickets.)

Got a finished short languishing somewhere? Or a work-in-progress? Tonight at 8 pm, the Echo Park Film Center holds an Open Screen Nightwhere you can share your film with a feisty audience. It’s first-come, first-screened event with one film per filmmaker (10-minutes maximum). Formats accepted: DVD, VHS, mini-DV, DV-CAM, Super 8, standard 8mm and 16mm. $5 suggested donation.
