The Stanley Kubrick film retrospective continues at LACMA tonight with a 7:30 pm screening of The Shining. The 1980 film with Jack Nicholson, Danny Lloyd and Shelley Duvall is based on the Steven King novel of the same name and follows an aspiring writer’s descent into madness as he and his family are taking care of a mountain resort closed for the winter. It’s filled with mysterious symbolism and unforgettable imagery. Special guests tonight are Room 237 director Rodney Ascher and producer Tim Kirk, who’ll be in conversation with Brooks Barnes from The New York Times about their documentary on the hidden meanings in The Shining. Two great events happening at Nerdmelt tonight. First up at 7 pm is Authoritatively Funny, where Conan O'Brien's late night talk show writers perform skits and do live readings of their own work, including Jose Arroyo (Seething With Joy), Laurie Kilmartin (Sh*tty Mom),Todd Levin (Our Bodies, Our Junk), Sarah Thyre (Dark At The Roots) and Rob Kutner (The Future According to Me). At 9 pm, Dan Harmon, Community creator is tonight’s special guest in the current-affairs sketch-comedy quiz show The Friday Forty. Hosts Scott Gimple and Dave Holmes give performers liquid courage to help them answer 40 questions about the week’s events. Tickets for each event: $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
iam8bitgallery presents an ingenious exhibition The Potato Chip Pop-Up tonight from 7-11 pm. Snacking is taken to an art form. They’ve imported potato chips from around the world, including Japan, England, Scotland, Australia, Canada, Singapore, India and regional offerings from around the US. The Lost Moon Radio musical-comedy troupe brings its Holiday Special to KPCC’s Crawford Family Forum tonight and Club Fais Do-Do tomorrow night. Back are favorite characters and sketches and songs perfect for the season. After each performance, audiences can participate ih live-band karaoke with the “ever-popular and wildly handsome” The Moon Units. We just learned that tonight’s show is at capacity, but there are still tickets left for tomorrow night ($12.99).
