More Wins, But Less Revenue for LA Sports in 2009

2009 might have been a good year for Los Angeles-area sports teams, but when it comes to the financial side, the news isn't anything to cheer about. A study conducted in partnership with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the Los Angeles Sports Council, and the UCLA Anderson School of Management shows a decline in revenue in pro sports in the region, according to the Daily Breeze.
Sure, the Lakers were NBA champs in 2009, and seven of our nine area teams won more games than they lost, but the report "shows an 18 percent decline in revenue from sports-related activities in 2009 compared to a study conducted two years earlier."
Blame the economy: "The business box score showed drops of 39 percent in part-time employment by sports organizations and 16 percent in attendance, and a decline in average ticket prices." Ultimately, the "study sponsors attributed the setbacks to the recession."
Covered in the study were "professional franchises; major college sports programs; stadiums, arenas and racetracks; and recurring events such as the L.A. Marathon, the Long Beach Grand Prix and the Rose Bowl football game." The group began doing the study in the early 1990s; they conduct one every two or three years.
