Metro Teamed Up With A YouTube Star For These Wild Etiquette Videos Inspired By J-Pop

Metro has gotten inventive with their public service ads in the past. Take this one, for example, in which stick figures die in gruesome ways as they overlook safety precautions.

This time around, Metro is taking aim at rider etiquette, and they’ve teamed up with YouTube star Anna Akana and director Mike Diva. Akana’s YouTube channel (which has 1.5 million-plus subscribers) is comprised of short films and self-reflective videos in which she touches on topics like mental health and dating. And Diva is behind a number of viral hits, including this one about an insane battle involving fidget spinners; his videos fall somewhere in the intersection of anime, 8-bit video games, and ‘80s music videos.

The Metro ads are heavily influenced by J-pop, and feature a slovenly orange creature named “Rude Dude,” whose unthoughtful behavior is rebuked by Akana’s “Super Kind” character. Here, they tackle the issue of food (“Don’t eat popcorn, meat, or kale.”):

And in this video Akaka wants you to clear out the aisle so that other people can get through (“You need to leave some space, so that we can go about our day.”):

And this ad shows Rude Dude putting down an entire crate of pineapples on the seat next time him, inspiring Akana to sing about the ills of seat hogging:

Will they get people to refine their manners while going Metro? We’re not so sure, but the kaleidoscope graphics and the blaring songs (the hooks are surprisingly catchy) will keep the viewer’s attention, at the very least.

As explained at The Source, Metro’s blog, the agency has “put a lot of effort into these videos in hopes they would be seen by a ton of people, including most of our riders.” They also remind us that, yes, there’s an actual Customer Code of Conduct that lists all the do’s and don’ts (maybe they can hire Goofus and Gallant next time to drive home the points).
