LAst Night's Action: The Calm before the Storm

LA Dodgres defeat Philadelphia Phillies 9-2. Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness wrote a post in the morning about James Loney not hitting a homer. On cue, Loney hit his first homer of the season, an Earl Weaver, against Phillies starter Jamie Moyer in the fourth inning that helped the Dodgers break the game open in a five run inning. While it wasn't a steal of home, Matt Kemp scored on a Randy Wolf bunt - not quite a squeeze play but just as effective. Meanwhile the pitching held things together thanks to Wolf's strong six innings giving up an earned run on a Jimmy Rollins solo shot in the second inning. The bullpen didn't completely implode which is all any Dodger fan can hope for.
LA Angels defeat Boston Red Sox 8-4. Despite starting off shaky to start the game, Angels starter Matt Palmer stayed in the game and eventually retired the last 19 batters to throw a complete game against the Sox. While Palmer gave up two runs in the first and second innings including a two-run shot by Jason Bay in the first inning, the Angels offense responded against knuckle-baller Tim Wakefield in the third shelling him for five runs. Catcher Mike Napoli hit an Earl Weaver in that inning, and Torii Hunter hit a solo shot in the fourth. Kudos to manager Mike Scioscia for sticking with Palmer allowing him to throw his first career complete game despite not in line for a shut out. Actually thinking about it, with that bullpen I wouldn't pull Palmer either.
