Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 5-3 (10). Yeah the Dodgers lost the game. The newest Dodger as of 9:00 pm Ronnie Belliard made a great impression with the fans by hitting a solo homer in his first at-bat. Manny Ramirez and Matt Kemp hit back-to-back solo shots in the sixth inning. But the DBacks would come back to win it.

But eclipsing the game were the trades the Dodgers made for Chicago White Sox veteran slugger Jim Thome and DBacks starter Jon Garland. Minor Leaguer Justin Fuller will be going to the White Sox in the Thome deal and the famous "Player To Be Named Later" will accompany the Garland deal. These are huge additions for the Dodgers. Thome, who has been the designated hitter for the Sox and will only play first base in emergency situations, will be a huge bat off the bench. Think Phillies Matt Stairs last year in the NLCS against Jonathan Broxton. Jon Garland gives the Dodgers a good stable starter who can eat up innings.

Any player to be put on the playoff roster for a team must be on the 40-man roster by midnight ET on September 1 which is why the trades were made during the Dodgers game.

LA Angels defeat Seattle Mariners 10-0. Oh yeah. The Angels played. The Angels used the long ball to beat the Mariners. Vladimir Guerrero hit two two-run homers, one in the third inning and one in the seventh inning, and Juan Rivera hit a three-run shot in the fifth inning. Meanwhile Joe Saunders silenced any lingering questions by pitching seven shutout innings giving up only three hits and three walks while striking out four.
