LA Angels defeat Detroit Tigers 7-1. In this edition of Breakfast with the Angels, the Angels bats pounded the Tigers into submission. They drove Tiger's starter Kenny Rogers out of the game in the third inning after pitching to four Angels hitters and getting none of them out. He gave up six runs on eight hits in those two-plus innings and looked nothing like the dominant pitcher we know him to be. Angel's starter Ervin Santana meanwhile gave up only one run on a solo shot in the eighth inning. He would pitch 7 1/3 innings giving up that lone run and six hits while striking out eight. I think someone is ready for the postseason.

Notable Notes

  • The Artist Formerly Known as Chad Johnson did it. He officially changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco. It's amazing what lengths a determined person will go through to insert some entertainment value in the No Fun League. While all of this is cute, let's see the numbers he puts up in the season.
  • The New York Giants and Washington Redskins kicked off the NFL season in an underwhelming way. Aside from some spectacular plays in the first half, the game was more or less a snoozefest. Both teams scored no points in the second half looking like a sloppy version of the NFC East we have all come to know and love. Or is it "know and roll our eyes at"? Whatever. The score was 16-9, less points combined than some baseball games this season.
  • Keeping with the Washington Redskins, Redskins tight end Chris Cooley shot a video of some members of his team and selected girlfriends getting together at his house for a fantasy football draft. No disrespect to Cooley, but Fred Smoot absolutely steals the show. What is most surprising about this is the fact that almost all of them had no idea what fantasy football was.

Arizona Diamondbacks at LA Dodgers. The series of the season is here. To prove what a huge series this is, ESPN is broadcasting this game nationally. Slumping Dan Haren (14-7, 3.24) will try and turn his 5.63 ERA-in-his-last-six-games around against Derek Lowe (11-11, 3.69). The fucked up part about having the game on the Four-Letter is that the game will start early for a Friday night. 7:05 pm FSN Prime Ticket (ESPN nationally), AM 790 KABC.

LA Angels at Chicago White Sox. Dustin Moseley (1-3, 7.15) will get the spot start in place of Jered Weaver who cut his middle and ring fingers of his throwing hand on a dugout bench in Detroit the other night. Mark Buehrle (11-11, 4.12) and his 2:05 pitching performance against the Dodgers earlier this season will go for the White Sox who are battling for playoff positioning in the AL Central with the Minnesota Twins. 5:11 pm FSN West, AM 830 KLAA.
