Los Angeles has no shortage of stories or talented filmmakers. On Location: The Los Angeles Video Project presents the best of both. NewFilmmakers Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Convention & Visitors Bureau and LA Weekly curate the series of 1-4 minute mixed media shorts at Sunset Gower Studios. Much sunnier than L.A. Noire, the audience selections & grand prizes valued at $100K will leave everyone with plenty to smile about. Tickets are $10 (available online only), with an extra $5 unlocking the open bar after-party.

Fittingly, many of LA's most scenic locales are in & around our theaters. No slouch to Hollywood history, the Egyptian Theatre prefaces their Sunday screening of Harold Lloyd silents with a walking tour of nearby filming locations. Lloyd isn't a household name like Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton, but it's a joy to see him clamber up, down & all around local landmarks. One of the night's shorts, Never Weaken, was even shot on location at what would later be dubbed the Pig 'n Whistle!

Speaking of pigs, the perpetrators behind Psycho Cop 2: Psycho Cop Returns should be arraigned for crimes against cinema. Barring that, the latest from Horrible Movie Night offers a chance for a public roasting & possible explanation. For all the blood, boobs & wood(en acting) on hand, one wouldn't expect Psycho Cop 2: Psycho Cop Returns' "talent" to retreat into family fare. Yet director Adam Rifkin wrote Mousehunt, Small Soldiers & Underdog, while writer Dan Povenmire went on to the Disney series Phineas & Ferb. At least the Psycho Cop himself, Bobby Ray Shafer, held down the direct-to-video action fort in the Mega Shark & Super Shark films. Oh, and some show called The Office. Bring your a-game to this b-movie; as with previous programs, Horrible Movie Night has prizes for the audiences' best civil disobedience.

It was anything but civil in 1932 when director Tod Browning unleashed his Freaks upon the world. The still-controversial circus picture is a dark, Gothic melodrama, with a cast made up almost entirely of real sideshow performers. The film's poor reception ended Browning's career, but his legacy lives on at the Aero's "American Gothic: A Tod Browning Retrospective." Screening alongside Browning's most infamous film is his most famous, Bela Lugosi's Dracula, and two silents starring Lon Chaney.
