LAist Film Calendar 01/20-01/23: Epics at the Egyptian & Lemmy at Laemmle's
It's the most epic Egyptian weekend since they unveiled the pyramids! Celebrate the 10th anniversary of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films with 10+ hours of magic & mayhem, as the entire trilogy screens back-to-back-to-back in the extended director's cuts. The all-day affair begins in the Egyptian's courtyard, with the Renaissance Pleasure Faire bringing medieval mirth, merchants, music & munchies. Hope they have 'taters!
From the black corridors of Mordor to the bleak corners of space, the Egyptian also sports 2001: A Space Odyssey in mind-blowing 70mm. Coming down from the heavens, they also host a sparkling new print of historical epic The Leopard, dubbed "the Italian Gone With The Wind". As if there weren't enough icons this weekend, the Hollywood Icons series bows out with a double dose of Marilyn Monroe. Don't ever accuse the Egyptian of stiffing you any bang for your buck!
True Jackson aficionados (or fans who can't spare a day) can delve even deeper into his back catalogue at Laemmle's Sunset with Reflections of the Past, playing at 11AM on Saturday & Sunday. The documentary tracks two New Zealand teens whose fatalistic friendship and dangerous obsessions informed the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures. From murderers to mutton-chops, Lemmy is another killer doc, charting the rise and continued rough & tumble of the Motorhead frontman. The metal master explodes onto the screen via concert performances, crazed fan footage, and love letters from everyone in hard rock he influenced. Which is pretty much everyone in hard rock.
Finally, any talk of epicness would be remiss without mentioning that Scott Pilgrim vs. The World director Edgar Wright's "The Wright Stuff 2" line-up continues at the New Beverly. Take a moment to review last week's Film Calendar for full coverage. Then get hustling to snatch up those last few tickets!
