Big Fish: Jackie Tohn Makes A 'Platinum' Splash At Barre
Jackie Tohn may have started the show with a song about wanting a life of confined success on the tune "Big Fish" but she's not fooling anyone. It is tropical-waters clear that the Silver Lake resident has thoroughly outgrown the small pond.
Fans and friends from her American Idol days sat in audience harmony with her new castmates from Bravo's upcoming songwriting competition Platinum Hit while industry types held court at the bar and famous faces like Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard and Kyle Dunnigan cheered in fevered support of the poly-gifted Tohn on the opening night of her residency at Barre in Los Feliz earlier this month.
Record label ready, the dexterous and sophisticated performer opened her giant mouth inside the capacity packed venue and let out a mighty sound that threatened to drown even the full band accompaniment. The self-proclaimed "little Jewish girl from New York" who's been making time with Yahoo! Music, Lockerz, CSI:NY, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Mephis Beat over the past few years, ran through a big, two-hour setlist of original material from Beguiling (2009) and 2.Yo (2011), including "What is Love," as heard on KCRW, "The Falling," her song that came pre-loaded on the Google Nexus One phone and "Velvet Coat," a theatrical encore-worthy anthem loaded with cringe-worthy phone breakup dialogue.
The classic covers also came calling in the form of Dusty Springfield, Sir Mix-a-Lot, a raucous and bluesy re-imagining of the "Pee Wee's Playhouse" theme (think: sexy + campy) and a live vocal mashup with the help of Powerfox and Ponymane co-hort and Platinum Hit competitor, frenemy Jes Hudak. Said the perceptive stranger at a neighboring table, "Jackie... she's like... Alanis Morissette on Broadway." Concur.
Catch the final night of Jackie Tohn @ Barre on Wednesday, May 11 and the Series Premiere of Platinum Hit on Bravo Monday, May 30.
