In the final hours of the lead-up to the 2017 Academy Awards, stars and mere mortals gathered under a tent on the beach in Santa Monica Saturday afternoon. The 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards was officially underway, and while the ceremony may not be as formal as the Oscars, the night's winners are a sound gauge of how academy members will vote for the Oscars.

Comedians Nick Kroll and John Mulaney co-hosted this year's awards. Headline nominees include Jackie, Moonlight, and Manchester By The Sea for Best Feature. Casey Affleck is up for Best Male Lead for his turn in Manchester By The Sea, and Annette Bening, Ruth Negga, and Natalie Portman are all in competition for Best Female Lead.

For the night's John Cassavetes Award, an award given to a filmmaking team with a project under $500,000, Free In Deed, Hunter Gatherer, Love Song, Nakom, and Spa Night are in the running.

Here is a look at some of the glamour strutting along the ceremony's red (well, blue, in this case) carpet.
