A 22-month-old girl was killed Sunday night after being hit by a car that was backing out of a driveway in Compton, reports KTLA.

The incident took place at around 10:00 p.m. on the 600 block of North Willow Avenue. According to KTLA, the driver was the boyfriend of the girl's mother. He was backing out of the driveway when he felt his truck run over "an unknown object," according to a press release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He then got out of his car and found the injured child. The girl was later declared dead at the scene.

According to authorities the mother was home, but did not know that her child had wandered out of the home.

Sheriffs say that the driver did not appear to be under the influence of drugs, and there were no signs of foul play, reports the Associated Press.
