Back Home Again, Sort of
It's official. Arte Moreno has announced his team will now be called the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Now the Angels have come full circle, after they were originally named the Los Angeles Angels, because they played in the City of Angels. But California Angels never quite worked, and who wants to be called the Anaheim Angels?
The name Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim sounds absolutely absurd. But Arte Moreno knows exactly what he's doing. Everyone is going to call this team the LA Angels, and while they could win six more World Series titles and still play second-fiddle to the Dodgers, this is a necessary step toward prominance.
LAist is actually flattered that after Los Angeles lost two football teams, one pro sports team really does want to play here, even if they don't technically. Perhaps this will open the door for more teams to recognize their identity crises, like the New York Giants of East Rutherford, New Jersey, the Detroit Pistons of Auburn Hills, or the Tampa Bay Devil Rays of St. Petersburg. Maybe LAist will buy tickets to see the Buffalo Bills of Orchard Park, the New England Patriots of Foxboro, the Dallas Cowboys of Irving, the Phoenix Coyotes of Glendale, or the Florida Panthers of Sunrise. Why isn't our soccer team the Los Angeles Galaxy of Carson, or one of our basketball teams formerly the Los Angeles Lakers of Inglewood? And when is UCSB going to finally be University of California at Santa Barbara err, Goleta. But we digress...
The Angels are ours again, and not really the O.C.'s. So take that, Orange County.
