Babysitter's Boyfriend Allegedly Beat 2-Year-Old Until He Was Brain-Dead
The boyfriend of a babysitter was charged today for murder for allegedly beating a 2-year-old who was under the babysitter's care.Authorities arrived at a Norwalk home on Sunday around 12:50 p.m. after receiving a call about a "baby not breathing," according to the Los Angeles Times and KABC. The boy, who was in extremely critical condition and unresponsive, was taken to a Long Beach hospital where he was pronounced brain-dead. Officials reported Matamoros allegedly "assaulted the victim using blunt force trauma."
According to the babysitter's neighbors, Matamoros, who didn't speak English, asked neighbors for help and tried to explain the baby had fallen while in the shower, reported NBC Los Angeles.
Matamoros was initially charged with cruelty to a child likely to produce great bodily injury or death when he was arrested and his bail was set at $100,000. However, a spokesperson from the L.A. County district attorney's office told the Los Angeles Times today that he is now charged with one count of assault on a child causing death and one count of murder.
