A 9-year-old Anaheim girl was shot and killed on Wednesday while she was playing with her friends on her front yard.

Ximena Meza was shot around 7:15 p.m. on the 2300 block of W. Greenacre Avenue, according to CBS Los Angeles. Neighbors said they heard three or four gunshots ring and found the little girl on the sidewalk. She was shot on her right side, according to Anaheim Police.

The girl was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where she died half an hour later. It was about a month before it would've been her 10th birthday.

Anaheim Police Lt. Bob Dunn told the OC Register that they're not sure if the gun was shot by a pedestrian or from a car. The only details he gave so far was that the shooter was a man. Police are searching for the suspect and no arrests have been made.

Dunn told OC Weekly that the area is "a family-oriented neighborhood" that "is frequented by gang members who do claim this area."

Neighbors said that the family had just moved into that apartment about a month ago.
