More People Shot By Police In Los Angeles County Than Last Year
Police officers and sheriff's deputies were involved in 85 shootings this year so far, up from last year's total.
According to a report from KPCC, the district attorney's office says their investigators have been sent to the scene of 85 law enforcement shootings in 2015, as is usual for any case where an officer's bullet hits somebody. The number is up from last year's total of 74, but falls in line with the totals of the past 15 years. Last year's total was a low while the peak in that time frame was 116 in 2004.
According to data from The Washington Post, 41 people were fatally shot by police officers in Los Angeles County this year.
Since 2010, police have shot at least 375 people in the county, according to KPCC's in-depth investigation Officer Involved, and almost 50% of those shootings were fatal.
No officer in the county has been prosecuted for an on-duty shooting since 2000, and of the five cases from 2015 the D.A. has finished reviewing no charges have been filed.
The LAPD has been the subject of intense scrutiny over the last year from notable police shootings such as the fatal shooting of Charly Keunang in Skid Row and the shooting of Walter de Leon, who lost a portion of his skull. On Saturday, LAPD officers shot and killed Ruben Herrera in a hospital emergency room. Family members say Herrera was bipolar.
