Director, Marketing and Communications

Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) is a member-supported public media network whose mission is to strengthen the civic and cultural bonds that unite Southern California's diverse communities by providing the highest quality news and information service on air at 89.3 KPCC, online at and through KPCC In Person. Position Summary:

The Director, Marketing and Communications is responsible for developing and leading the execution of marketing and communications strategies for Southern California Public Radio (SCPR), KPCC and LAist Studios. This role manages the execution of conversion strategies and tactics for all SCPR brands: and projects, inclusive of ensuring brand consistency and crafting messaging strategies to engage key current audiences and aspirational audiences. This role leads the maximization of audience growth efforts through owned, earned, shared and paid media channels. The Director of Marketing and Communications will be a key contributor to promoting diversity, equity and inclusiveness initiatives within SCPR.


The salary for this opportunity will be no less than $106,914 annualized. Exact salary determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure and internal equity.

Position Responsibility:

        • Develop and oversee the execution of strategic integrated marketing plans that can help achieve our broadcast audience growth goals and online growth goals. Inclusive but not limited to: site traffic, memberships qualified leads, email acquisition, newsletter subscriptions, podcast downloads, online streaming, others.
        • Develop and collaborate in the execution of a comprehensive paid social media strategy for all of our initiatives and brands.
        • Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop comprehensive content distribution strategies and partnerships that can boost our online and offline growth goals.
        • Project management to include planning, organizing, securing, leading and controlling resources to achieve specific goals (e.g communications, branding, audience growth, audience retention, brand reputation management, etc).
        • Manage the development and implementation of brand and communication guidelines.
        • Lead the development and implementation of earned media plans and manage the relationship with our PR agency.
        • Supervise the development of marketing assets and collateral.
        • Hire, supervise and manage direct staff through direct coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and on-going feedback.
        • Oversee and manage the overall marketing budget.
        • Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive audience research and audience insights strategy and implement it.

        Required Education and Experience:

            • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, or related subject area; or equivalent work experience
            • 8 + years of overall work experience, including a minimum of 4 years at management level, including providing work direction or supervisory experience

            Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

                  • Experience managing multiple programs and clients.
                  • Experience implementing multi-dimensional marketing initiatives.
                  • Demonstrated high degree of professional initiative and accountability.
                  • Ability to provide strategic direction, lead strategic discussions.
                  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of internal clients and staff, and a high degree of initiative and attention to detail is a must.
                  • Competence in transitioning from detail-oriented tasks to seeing the bigger picture.
                  • Demonstrated high degree of professional initiative and accountability.
                  • Strong verbal communication, presentation and writing skills.

                  Preferred Skills and Experience:

                        • Experience in online marketing and new marketing technologies.
                        • Experience from a marketing or advertising agency.
                        • Experience in organizing and staffing community events.
                        • An enthusiasm for the product and company.
                        • A familiarity with and specific interest in public radio, its programs and audiences.
                        • Ability to thrive in the fast-paced, ever-changing and at times, very stressful, environment.

                        Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

                        • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
