Pencil This In: Tubefilter Tackles Online Video, NerdMelt Magic, a Variety Show and a 'Naked Lunch'

What's going on in LA tonight? Tubefilter takes on the online video biz, David Cronenberg's 'Naked Lunch' screens with William Burroughs' cut-up films, a new variety show launches in Silver Lake and a magic talk show. Read on for all the details.

Tubefilter presents the program Pay to Play: Will Viewers Pay to Watch Online Video?tonight at 7 pm at Busby’s East. The ad-supported revenue video model is changing. Will it be replaced by a pay-to-play model? On the panel tonight are Actor Michael Urie of ABC's Ugly Betty, CBS's Partners and Thank You For Judging; Dan Dobi, creator of YouTube documentary Please Subscribe; and Brian Norgard, founder and CEO of Chill, a company that specializes in providing direct-to-consumer content. The evening is moderated by Tubefilter and Streamy Awards founder Drew Baldwin. Tickets: $10-$15.

Cinefamily continues its Beat Generation film series tonight with a focus on William Burroughs. His cut-up films—re-assemblages created with partner Antony Balch—Towers Open Fire (1963) and Cut-Ups (1967)—screen at 9:45 pm, followed by David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch at 10:30 pm. Cinefamily calls Burroughs’ book, a “non-linear paean to homosexuality, espionage and a psyche-shattering level of drug use brought Eisenhower-era audiences to their knees...” And Cronenberg’s film does the book justice. Tickets - $12/free for members.

Victory Lap, a new variety show, begins tonight at 9 pm at The Virgil. To celebrate, there’s $5 cocktail specials and $5 beer/wine all night, prizes, games, music, comedy and surprises. Special guests include John Roberts (Bob's Burgers), comedian Claire Titelman, musician Steven Taylor (opener for Stone Foxes/Mumford and Sons) and Santa. The show’s hosted by Seth W. Owen (Host of The Roosevelt Hotel's Monday Movie Night) and Stuart Jenkins (AP of BBC America's The Nerdist). Free.

NerdMelt presents Sleight Of Mouth with Justin Willman tonight at 8 pm. Magician Willman (Food Network's Cupcake Wars, The Nerdist Channel) hosts a late night-style talk show with guests Bushwalla, Dan Levy, Krystyn Lambert and others. Tickets: $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Located at the back of Meltdown Comics on Sunset.
