Pencil This In: Nerd Nite in LA, NewFilmmakers LA Screenings and Tea Cocktails at Descanso Gardens

The film 'Off the Ledge' screens at NewFilmmakers LA tonight at Sunset Gower Studios.
NERD NITE
The first
Nerd Night LA
takes over the Air-Conditioned Supper Club in Venice tonight. It sounds a little like the Mindshare events with a mix of a little learning and a little drinking. Tonight, there will be three “nerds” giving presentations on personal injury lawsuits, staph infections and computer hacking. 7:30 pm. $10 at the door.
FILM
NewFilmmakers LA
takes over Sunset Gower Studios for its monthly screening program of five short films, one documentary and one narrative film, from 5:30-11:30 pm tonight. Documentary reception and screening is at 5:30 and 6, respectively, followed by the shorts reception and program at 7 and 7:30, and then the feature film reception at 8:30 with the screening at 9 pm. Admission to each program is $5 and includes a pre-screening reception (full bar and snacks) with the filmmakers.
COCKTAILS
We have about a week left to head over for an evening of the setting sun and cocktails at
Descanso Gardens
. Through Sept. 9 (Tues-Thurs), the gardens are open until 8 pm, and visitors can head over to the Japanese Full Moon Tea House, which has been transformed into the Camellia Lounge. Sip on iced tea cocktials like Irish Tea-se (Earl Grey and Bailey’s) or Pink Perfection (Chamagne, vodka, crimson berry tea, berry syrup) and partake in small plates. Admission to the gardens: $8.
KNOTTY DERBY*
Bigfoot Lodge (East)
presents the monthly Knotty Pine Derby Championship Race tonight at 9 pm. It’s simple, build a car from a kit (which are available for purchase at the bar), follow the rules and let it rip.
