Vegas in LA: Cirque du Soleil
Celebrate the acrobatic act's 25th anniversary with FREE performances from all six Las Vegas productions of the renown acrobatics troupe. Expect to see portions from Mystere, O, Zumanity, Ka and Love. The free show goes on from noon to 5 p.m. in the main courtyard area near the movie theatres of The Grove...a stage will be placed over the fountain.
Classic Chaplin and Keaton at the New Beverly
The New Beverly is showing Modern Times today at 4 and 7:30. The film was directed by Charlie Chaplin, who also stars in the 1936 film along with Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman, and Tiny Sandford. Also showing is the 1926 silent classic The General, directed by Clyde Bruckman & Buster Keaton, starring Buster Keaton, Marion Mack, Glen Cavender, and Jim Farley; shows at 5:55 & 9:20 tonight.Two amazing films on the big screen!
Fowler OutSpoken Lectures: Aboriginal Art
Today there are two lectures on what is the closing-day of the Fowler's exhibits Icons of the Desert and Innovations in Western Desert Painting. First, collector Richard Kelton discusses his first encounter with Australian Aboriginal art in 1979, and what he has learned over the past thirty years through studying and collecting the material. Then, Kelton Foundation curator Kerry Smallwood traces the stylistic and iconographic development of Aboriginal art since the introduction of acrylic painting at Papunya in 1971. 2 p.m.
Krishna Karnival: Festival of the Chariots
Head to the Santa Monica-Venice area to celebrate Jagannatha, the Lord of the Universe, with a colorful parade of three fully decorated, four-story chariots as part of the Festival of the Chariots. Practice your chants: The festival grounds on the Venice Boardwalk have booths with food, yoga, and meditation, all free of charge. Parade starts at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, then proceeds south on Main St. to Ocean Front Walk at Venice Beach Boardwalk. Things get underway at 10 a.m.
Rock n Roll Community Garden: Garden Party
Rock out with your pruners out? Head to the Fountain Community Garden (5620 Fountain Avenue) from 5-7pm. Enjoy live music by Odious Ari & The Syphilitic Syncopaths, and art & gardening demo, talks by Alex Alferov, Maria Massa and Joeseph Prichard of Fountain Community Garden. $5 suggested donation, and, if you can, bring drinking glasses to donate to Rock n Roll Community Garden parties.
