TV Junkie: Oscars Most Viewed Since '05

Last night's broadcast of the Oscars had the most viewership since 2005 which is in line with the popularity of most of the awards shows this year. We were shocked that Farrah Fawcett was not included in this year's "death montage" - true, she was honored specifically at the Emmys but it was a mistake to ignore her work in film which is where she ultimately proved herself worthy of recognition.

Movie Review: 'Shutter Island'

TV Junkie: NBC and the Corner It's Painted Itself Into; John Oliver Tonight, 'Big Love' & 'Battlestar Galactica' Sunday

This Sunday FOX celebrates the 450th episode of "The Simpsons" Yesterday, did we publish an "unconfirmed" rumor that NBC was canceling "The Jay Leno Show"? Kind of. At the very least, if NBC moves the show from it's 10pm slot back to 11:35pm, and makes it 1/2 hour - that is a very different show than what was originally planned. The biggest problem is that NBC appears to not know what it is doing,...

TV Junkie: Lady Gaga Guests on 'Launch My Line'; Shawn Ryan Gets New Series; Beginning of the End for 'Nip/Tuck'

The final season of "Nip/Tuck" begins airing tonight, 10pm on FX Tonight the final season of FX's "Nip/Tuck" begins airing at 10pm. While the show has had its highs and lows, it has consistently been confrontational and controversial and we don't expect anything less. While verging on the pornographic, the show has taken a pointed view of our town since McNamara/Troy moved its practice from Florida to Los Angeles a few seasons ago, and...

TV Junkie: Double Doses of 'Scrubs' & 'Better Off Ted' Tonight; Carolla Gets Another Network Shot

Two new episodes of "Better Off Ted" air tonight on ABC (8:30 & 9:30pm). Unfortunately, this great show will most likely be leaving the air by the end of the month. Did anyone catch the "Heroes" premiere last night? Was it the "movie event" that NBC had promised for the last month? We want to hear from the hardcore fan base: how is this series holding up? If you don't watch it anymore, why...

Welcome to 2010 an thanks for reading the TV Junkie on LAist. 2009 was a great year for us as we hit our 1,000th post a couple weeks ago (we'll post a highlights reel for you soon) and 2010 somehow looks even better. Why not start the year out right by following the TV Junkie on Twitter as well as our LAist feed. As always, your comments and feedback are always appreciated.

TV Junkie: You May Lose FOX (or not); 'MOACA' Tonight; NYE Shows

It's still possible, if not probable, that if you have Time Warner cable, you will lose your FOX stations at 12:01am this Friday as the network and cable provider have not reached an agreement on the per subscriber reimbursement fee. FOX wants up to 50% more per subscriber compared to the other major networks fees and Time Warner isn't happy about that. Unless you want your fee to get a non-significant hike, you shouldn't be happy about it either. With less than 4 days to go, do you think they will work things out?

TV Junkie: Baldwin Not Quitting; The Muppets on Fallon

At the beginning of the month we wrote about Alec Baldwin's potential retirement based on comments he made in Men's Health Magazine but he now wants to clarify that these comments were misconstrued and that he has no intention of retiring anytime soon (phew!)...

TV Junkie: 'Scrubs' & 'Better Off Ted' To Disappear? Yule Log Programming

LA denizens will have a couple Yule Log options this Xmas Looks like ABC will be doubling up on broadcasting episodes of "Scrubs" and "Better Off Ted" in January which means that they will run out of episodes by the end of the month, implying that these shows will not be renewed. A shame since we think "Better Off Ted" is ABC's other comedy standout next to "Modern Family". We haven't been following the...

TV Junkie: Last Minute Gifts for the TV Inclined/Afflicted

Yes, the question of what to get someone perennially comes up but if you know of any of their TV-viewing proclivities answering that question gets a lot easier. Here are some ideas that go beyond the obvious: Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XVI. As if it would be a surprise, we are the type of person(s) who spew a continuous stream of dialogue while viewing anything on TV and MST3K was a show built for us. Volume XVI features not only four incredibly bad films, including the horrific by seasonally perfect Santa Claus (which involves a dance number from Satan among other things) but the set includes a miniature Tom Servo character to accompany your viewing pleasure...

TV Junkie: From 'Californication' to Real Life; PaleyFest 2010 Plans

Rick Springfield's storyline on "Californication" seems to have migrated to reality Look for our "What's Missing from the WGA and Golden Globe Nominees" post later tonight. --- In a fiction-becomes-reality story, Rick Springfield, who has had a recurring role on this season of "Californication" as himself-trying-to-market-his-memoirs, will be publishing his actual memoirs in October of 2010 without any help from Charlie Runkle. --- It's not too early to be thinking about the 2010 William...

TV Junkie: Guidovision Update; IMDb's STARmeter Rankings

As we surmised in the TV Junkie last week, MTV has removed the footage of a man punching a young woman in the face in their show "Jersey Shore" aka Guidovision after milking the shock value of the clip in promo after promo for the show. Ain't that classy? Some folks really love this show and some folks really love to rubberneck at gory traffic accidents, sometimes we think these are the same folks.

TV Junkie: 'Dexter' Season Finale on Sunday; 'Flight of the Conchords' TV Show Officially Dead

John Lithgow on Showtime's "Dexter", season finale on Sunday at 9pm This weekend, the focus comes down to Sunday programming for probably the last "big" finale of the season: the season finale of Showtime's "Dexter". Photo: Art Streiber Multi-Emmy-award winner Andre Braugher is a cast member of multi-Emmy-award winner Ray Romano's new comedy on TNT, "Men of a Certain Age" which premieres tonight at 10pm. TV Junkie: Congress Wants to Talk to Bravo About Gatecrashers; 'Sons of Anarchy' Renewed; Binge Drinking

"Fringe" (FOX @ 9pm) looks to be suitably weird and disgusting tonight - yay! TV Junkie: 'Sons of Anarchy' Finale Write-Up; 'Nip/Tuck' Series Finale Announced; HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' Set

Just a couple episodes of "Nip/Tuck" before hiatus - the final 9 episodes begin airing in January. So what did you think about the "Sons of Anarchy" finale? We thought it was very well played and fully occupied the 90-minute slot but a few of the setups for next season were a little too obvious. [Caution: Spoiler] So they let Ethan Zobelle live and he will undoubtedly seek vengeance on SAMCRO for the death...

TV Junkie: Alec Baldwin to quit acting? NBC's Not So Jolly Xmas; 'Raising the Bar' Dumped by TNT

In the December issue of Men's Journal Alec Baldwin states that he's lost interest in acting and that he will retire at the "30 Rock" wrap party and/or in 2012. This would be an unfortunate loss for both the small and big screen. Baldwin states that his lack of success in film is a big reason behind his disillusionment. But wait, word has it that Baldwin is strongly favored to be an Oscar nominee for...

TV Junkie: 'Trauma' Has a Pulse; Tivo Beats Leno; White Christmas

NBC's "Trauma", like a Monty Python sketch, ain't dead yet according to Chuck Barney at the Contra Costa Times. After trimming it's production costs the producers were given the green light to make 3 more episodes. We like the show (it's on the TV Junkie Plan tonight at 9pm) because: it's the only medical drama series with some action/cajones on TV right now; it's shot in our onetime home of SF and that location has become a character in the show; and it stars the talented and lovely Anastasia Griffith whom we interviewed at the Emmys and also a couple years ago about her work on FX's "Damages".
