LAist Caption Contest: GOTV with the Obama Girls + Stevie Wonder @ UCLA

Caption this in the comments section. All photos by Kelly C. Gallamore for LAist Stevie Wonder was the first of two surprises led to the Pauley Pavilion floor by Michelle Obama at yesterday's Get Out the Vote for Obama Rally. After a short explanation of his history as a Clinton supporter turned Obama believer, Wonder led the crowd in a rather difficult vocal exercise based on the candidate's name (see video below). Maria Shriver Endorses Obama at UCLA Rally

(l-r) Caroline Kennedy, Oprah Winfrey, Maria Shriver, Maria Elena Durazo, Michelle Obama "If Barack Obama was a state," California's First Lady said, "he'd be California." The ecstatic crowd at the 3/4-full Pauley Pavilion punctuated each of Maria Shriver's follow-up descriptors with a resounding "YEAH!" "Diverse, open, smart, independent, bucks tradition. Innovative. Inspirational. Dreamer. Leader." Michelle Obama's lengthy introduction for Maria Shriver had everyone looking around. The crowd erupted when Shriver appeared (see the video...

Another Look at This Year's Best Super Bowl Ads

How 'bout the end of that Super Bowl? Good thing Eli Manning came through because the ads really weren't all that, save for the near death of Richard Simmons (with Alice Cooper behind the wheel). But at $2.7 million per 30 seconds, who are we to not expect more? Gotta dig that nutty unibrow: I CAN haz Doreetoh!!!11!:...

Wait, There's Something Else I Have to Consider Tomorrow?

Sarah Silverman's Apology to Kimmel: 'I'm Fuckin' Matt Damon'

Silverman came clean last night, honoring boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel's 5th anniversary on late night with a music video. The real surprise: Damon is actually funny in this video and he gets a little payback at Kimmel, whose show often closes with a gag along the lines of: "Apologies to Matt Damon, we've run out of time...."...

Schwarzenegger 'Loves It,' Endorses McCain With Giuliani at His Side

Arnie and Johnny Mac had their little love-in this morning with Rudy G looking on. But Gov. Schwarzenegger's public endorsement of McCain was sandwiched by an abundance of pandering. Even the host CEO of Solar Integrated Technologies, took full advantage of the hundreds of journalists in attendance to pimp his company. "This is an example of how much excitement solar energy can create," said Schwarzenegger. "I love it." But the excitement had little to...

Giuliani AND Schwarzenegger to Endorse McCain Today?

Our crack political team is projecting "reason to believe" that both Rudy Giuliani and Gov. Schwarzenegger will endorse John McCain for the Republican nomination very soon. We've sorted through various flight plans and itineraries, deciphered a number of "no comments" and left several voice messages on Wolf Blitzer's cell. Schwarzenegger will endorse "within days," Sen. Lindsay Graham told reporters before McCain took off for Burbank this morning. It's unclear whether that means today, or...

Photo Essay: Tough Cookies Topple Fight Crew at LA Derby Dolls' Season Opener

The Tough Cookies' Venus d'Maulr / All photos by Kelly C. Gallamore for LAist While much of LA stayed home watching movies Saturday night, the real action was in Historic Filipinotown, where a sold out crowd of 2,000+ ventured out into a meteorological maelstrom to watch the L.A. Derby Dolls season-opening bout. The Tough Cookies dominated each quarter to knock off the Fight Crew 35-28 in the new Doll Factory, a converted 30,000 sq....

Obama Takes SC: Now It's All About February 5th

Barack is on a roll. He doubled Hillary Clinton's vote count in South Carolina's primary election yesterday. And Caroline Kennedy's op-ed (titled "A President Like My Father") in this morning's New York Times is adding fuel to the fire as pundits across the ideological spectrum ponder the B.O. mo-mo like they haven't since Iowa, a long three-and-a-half weeks ago. Now it's all about February 5. Consider your feelings about the primary today and think about...

Dear LAist, I Unexpectedly Rocked Out at Sundance with Velvet Revolver

We just received an unbelievable e-mail from friend-of-LAist and local indie troubadour Matthew Moon and wanted to share. Some amazing and surprising things really do happen at Sundance. After my performance at Rose Wagner Theater, I began driving the 25 minutes it takes to get back up to Park City. I checked my voice mail...

The Grammys Are a Go But Will Anyone Be Watching?

The WGA Board voted unanimously last night to not picket the 50th Grammy Awards, February 10th at Staples Center. If there was an exasperating gasp of relief following the WGA vote, excuse us for missing it. For most of our lifetime the Grammys has done little more than exemplify just how out of touch the so-called mainstream is with Gen x+y's musical taste (with apologies to The Dixie Chicks). The only way this Grammy Awards...

USC E-Mail Accounts Hit With Phishing Spam

We've all seen phishing e-mails before (thank you eBay, PayPal) but it's a bit trickier when the e-mail deliberately asking you to pony up your e-mail username and password comes from a sender purporting to be USCTEAM. The e-mail received today by several USC e-mail account holders suggests that the user's e-mail account will be terminated "permanently" within 7 days lest the recipient respond with account details including username, password, date of birth, and "country...

Judge Dismisses Clinton-Backers' Challenge; Vegas Casino Workers Free to Caucus

Sen. Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have spent the past couple days traipsing around the Golden State uncomfortably responding to allegations that their campaign is connected to a lawsuit brought last week by the Nevada teacher's union that would prevent casino workers from caucusing on the job. Many casino workers and hotel employees are members of the powerful Culinary Workers Union Local 226, which endorsed Barack Obama. The Nevada Democratic...

LAMill Boutique: Not Your Grandma's Coffeehouse

Photo by brainylagirl via flickr LA Mill finally (soft-)opened its "boutique" in Silver Lake last Friday and we were lucky to get there in time to sample the goods -- for free. The space is impressive but the environment -- almost pretentiously over the top. But let's discuss the coffee: I had two clover-style (filtered French drip) cups, one Kenyan, was an average medium-dark blend, with an acidic yet moderately rich, roasted coffee bean...

Will Michigan Make or Break Mitt?

Mitt Romney is the consummate, cookie-cutter, robot-like Republican. Forget about eliciting animation or human emotion from this wanna-be prez. Even his campaign henchmen lack the ability to opine on, well, just about anything, as evidenced below. Romney is lucky to have 30 delegates on his side after Iowa and New Hampshire. Problem is, it takes 1,191 to win the Republican nomination. The 60-year-old former Massachusetts governor does have one or two things going for him,...

FEMA reports that 19,000 requests have been filed to date. Applications can be filed, and their status checked,...

Here Comes Yet Another Bubble (Redux)

Right about the time we posted the YouTube clip "Here Comes Another Bubble" last week, it vanished from the Web. And so began one of the more intense Web 2.0 dramas of the year. Tonight, The Richter Scales returned with "Here Comes Another Bubble" Version 1.1 and, while it is supposedly infringement-free, it hasn't necessarily been blessed by all. After watching the redo, we conclude that the so-called "bubble" is a cutesy myth fabricated here...

'Independents' Can Vote for Democrats but Not Republicans in California Primary

California is still a hue of royal blue in the bloody bruise that exemplifies partisan U.S. politics. But with the ludicrous and often homogeneous plans suggested by members of the so-called "right" and "left," California voters have only grown to embrace their right-to-choose in a people's democracy. Californians who choose not to register as a red, blue, or third-party voter -- "Decline to State" voters -- comprise nearly one-fifth of the state's registered voters according...

Feds Order Cops to Return Pot to Owner, 2 1/2 Years Later

While you were sleeping: There's nothing wrong with the ganj in California, as long as you've got a scrip to use. So decided the 4th District Court of Appeals in the case of a 22-year-old who had a quarter of weed confiscated in a traffic stop by LAPD, despite having a prescription for marijuana as treatment for severe back pain. Now, how exactly will LAPD go about "returning" weed to rightful owner 2.5 years...

Rodney King Shot in San Bernardino

Rodney King, whose videotaped beating by LAPD officers (and their subsequent acquittal) sparked the Los Angeles riots in 1992, was shot late last night, according to San Bernardino police. King was shot in the face and arm with a pellet gun (LA Times) or perhaps a shotgun (KNX, USA Today) while riding his bike home to Rialto. R.I.P. Kevin DuBrow: Leader of Quiet Riot

One of heavy metal's signature vocalists has died at the too-young age of 52. Kevin DuBrow grew up in Hollywood and Van Nuys and in the late 1970s became the lead singer for Quiet Riot, the glam-metal brainchild of guitarist Randy Rhoads. Though Quiet Riot's brand of hard rock -- or whatever you wish to call it -- was never the same after the 1980s, Quiet Riot carried on, true to form, was featured on...

Fresh & Easy: First Look Slideshow

This week five fresh&easy grocery stores er, "neighborhood markets," opened in metro Los Angeles. We visited the Glassell Park store located in a gutted Albertson's on Eagle Rock Blvd (map) for our first impression of UK-based Tesco's (the world's third-largest grocer) attempt to hook finicky West Coast consumers. The array of fresh&easy branded products is impressive. The packaging is minimalist, reminiscent of a Safeway or Walgreen's branded generic. But as you'll see in the slideshow...

Entire Mexican State Underwater, U.S. Slow to Notice

An area of Mexico larger than metro LA is almost completely underwater after two days of severe flooding. Granted, we're busy fighting a Global War on Terror and it's inconvenient to help our neighbors, not to mention our own domestic needs, but... it's probably worth knowing that 80 percent of Tabasco is underwater. More rain is on its way. Our fires were on front pages around the world. So how come when Mexico experiences...

The Daily Show Ridicules California Wildfire Coverage

Thanks to incessant media overproduction and round-the-clock rambling, the rest of the world could enjoy last week's wildfires as if it were watching another fiery, explosive drama out of Hollywood. The president even played himself in this one and came with hugs; everyone drank lattes and did yoga; and somehow Britney still made it to court. It was really all just part of a much bigger...

The Fox News vs. Porn Star Challenge

Our friends at Radar are celebrating the recent launch of News Corp's Fox Business Network with a challenging quiz: Fox News Anchor or Porn Star?. We got 7 out of 10, but hey, when it comes to skankiness on the tube, Rupe, O'Reilly, Hannity, et al may really be the ones missing the plot. Mark at the News Corpse blog takes this notion even further, alleging that Murdoch's use of "soft-core titillation and America's...

Ann Coulter: 'I Don't Want to Try to Understand'

At least that's what we were led to believe during a nearly ten minute, extended Wikipedia-style introduction of the lawyer-turned-talking head at USC's Annenberg Auditorium. "I've never seen such a friendly crowd at a college campus," Coulter beamed as the standing-room audience of about 250 settled down after the majority greeted her with a standing ovation. Coulter...

Fire Evacuees are Not 'Refugees'

Hear that sucking sound? The media's commitment to learning from its many recent mistakes in reporting ethics and the semantics thereof is again being sucked out of the collective memory hole. Two years ago, Hurricane Katrina survivors were initially referred to by numerous media outlets as "refugees." While "refugee" can be inferred to be descriptive of one who "takes refuge," the fact is that -- at least since the 1951 approval of the UN Convention...

Bill Maher Ejects 9/11 Truthers From Live Audience

I've spent a handful of Friday evenings in the Real Time with Bill Maher studio audience and it's a blast. But last night at Studio 33 on the CBS lot (of Price is Right and Carol Burnett fame) was a really weird one. Halfway through the show, four audience members seated individually in middle seats of different sections, challenged Maher to address 9/11 consipiracy theories, namely: "What happened to Building 7?" In the minutes preceding...

Drew Carey: 'I'd love to own a freeway in Los Angeles'

He plays the part on TV but Drew Carey is not all games all the time. The host of both The Price is Right and Power of 10, Carey moonlights as one of Hollywood's most visible Libertarians (see also: Clint Eastwood, Trey Parker, Jason Reitman). Starting today, he's taking it broadband via the Reason Foundation's new online video channel "for free minds and free markets," Reason.tv. "We need Reason to help fight the stupid drug...

Weekend Festival Guide: Less Talk, More Walk

Art walks, Food fairs, fashion, and film. It's fall in LA, and for another weekend we can forget about our lack of playoff-worthy baseball teams and professional football and take advantage of our final three weeks of Daylight Saving Time. The fun begins tonight, so you best start the weekend now. Downtown Art Walk Thursday, Noon - 9 p.m.: On the second Thursday of every month, Angelenos stroll up and down Spring and Main...

Metro Goes Mobile

You're never alone when you've got your cell phone. And now, you'll never be stranded. Metro today launched a new Web site, optimized for mobile phones and PDAs. The service offers a relatively easy-to-use trip planner as well as an LA Country traffic map, although the large map image is difficult to read on smaller phone screens. The site works on 90 percent of current hand-held devices, Metro claims, so we trust the early kinks...

Los Abandoned @ TarFest, 10/7/07

"This is our last song ever," shouted Lady P, still catching her breath from the previous number. My friend and I exchanged strange looks as if it were the apocalypse and somehow we didn't get the memo. Perhaps the La Brea Tarpits were boiling over and about to suck us in or some crazy Toxic Avenger shit was about to go down. Turns out we did miss the memo, but lived to tell of...

U.S. Media Blames Santa Monica College Professor for Burma Web Blackout

This afternoon, a news story attributed to Hollywood Reporter claimed: "L.A. professor triggers Myanmar Web shutdown." We're all too used to the sensationalist tendencies of today's media, but this headline is completely unfair and potentially devastating for Ryan McMillen, professor of English at Santa Monica College (or as the accuse-then-verify media reported, "professor of history"). The story isn't on the Hollywood Reporter Web site but it is credited as such by Reuters, WashingtonPost.com, and --...

LA, International Bands in the Spotlight at Detour

New York you're bringing us down. One look at this weekend's Detour Fest lineup and it appears that Los Angeles, once again, is the center of all things rock. While dozens of acts will descend on downtown LA this Saturday, from as far as Australia, Sweden, France, Mexico, and Missouri, the NYC rock scene is MIA. Hell, even the two-headed Raveonettes are staking their claim to Hollywood, listed as hailing from "New York, Los...

Bright Eyes and the Power of the Phil

Conor Oberst and friends were lucky to have one of the finest backing bands of all time Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl -- the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Suzie Katayama's arrangements made even Bright Eyes' small songs sound huge, leaving us wondering who picked the setlist -- Katayama or Oberst? (Correction: (Thanks commenter) Bright Eyes multi-instrumentalist (and third permanent member) Nate Walcott arranged, Katayama only conducted.) In recent Hollywood Bowl history the Phil has teamed...

Weekend Festival Guide: Clone Yourself

Autumn is upon us and here in LA we are harvesting art, music, and mayhem. For whatever reason, it seems that this is the busiest festival weekend of the year, with something for all ages, in all corners of LA, and all times of day and night. If ever there was a weekend to clone yourself and be everywhere at once, this would be it. Jump right in. Swerve Festival: This looks to be...

Free PDA with Ladytron and Great Northern

Need a reason to ride Metro? Tonight you can catch a bus or subway to Hollywood and surface to find Ladytron about to rock your socks off. Global Inheritance, a multi-faceted non-for-profit (also involved in this weekend's Swerve Fest) is back with their second in a series of Public Displays of Affection. Last October's inaugural PDA event fully vindicated the subways-are-fun philosophy lifestyle -- with DJ's, dancing, and a live set from Secret Machines....

Will LA Ever Have Citywide Wi-Fi?

Mayor Tony stood before a media gaggle at 7th & Fig in February and announced the birth of "LA Version 2.0." Free citywide Wi-Fi for all within two years, he proclaimed, momentarily appeasing critics and activists who have called for municipal funds and programs to help bridge the digital divide. But the skeptics among us are well aware of the extensive headaches and limited progress of the once-supposed trailblazing municipal Wi-Fi proposals in Philadelphia and...

Ask Mitt Romney 'Anything' at Chapman U.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is stopping at Chapman University in Orange on Sunday, capping off weekend fundraising dinner rounds elsewhere in OC. The public forum is billed "Ask Mitt Anything," and we've got a few suggested questions with which you can do just that... after the jump. WHAT: Public Forum w/ Mitt Romney WHEN: Sunday 9/23, 2:15 p.m. WHERE: Chapman University Theater, Orange (map). RSVP: Call (857) 288-2667, or email california@mittromney.com. AP Photo...

Arr! Pirates Take Back the Times

Just got an e-mail from NYTimes.com confirming the end of the two-year-old TimesSelect subscription experiment. Our friends in New York are thrilled about this and so are we. All the content fit to publish should be freely available. The e-mail isn't exactly a Steve Jobs-esque love letter, leaving us to wonder whether or not there will be rebates for those who recently plunked down $50 for the right to indulge in the opinions of Maureen...

LCD Soundsystem: "Someone Great"

The Arcade Fire show at Hollywood Bowl is only a day away (and we might be dancing in the rain). If you're not already familiar with openers LCD Soundsystem (feat. James Murphy / DFA Records), check out the brand-spankin' new video for "Someone Great," the next single from one of our favorite releases this year, Sound of Silver. Shot by Doug Aitken ("sleepwalkers"). UPDATE: Sadly, this video has been removed from YouTube only one day...

Florida Student Tasered at John Kerry Event

There are a million reasons LA is better than Gainesville, but both are home to major state universities with their own Taser-happy police forces. Earlier today, 21-year-old Florida student Andrew Meyer was apprehended by police and stunned with a Taser gun at a town hall meeting with Senator John Kerry on the UF campus. It seems he was tailed by the police as he came to ask the question -- challenging Kerry for not...

OC Deputies Taser, Cuff 15-Year-Old Autistic Boy

Taylor Karras was reported missing by his mother yesterday, after running away from a Westminster social services facility where he was receiving therapy for autism. Around 9:30 p.m., the 15-year-old boy was found just a block from his North Tustin home. Orange County Sheriff's deputies spotted Karras pushing a shopping cart in the street, chased him on foot, Tasered him once, and handcuffed him. Only when a passing neighbor recognized Karras did the authorities...

Watch Diddy's 'Sex Video' Ad -- Too Steamy for MTV?

NSFW as far as the video contains Hennessy and lingerie. Sean John's new Unforgivable Woman must be some stanky-ass perfume if MTV is really rejecting these ads. I mean, Mr. Combs remains fully dressed while striking multiple elevator-humping poses with Australian hottie Jessica Gomes. Above is the 3-minute long-player (the rejects were reportedly 30- and 60-second spots). Surely there's nothing a Britney or L.Lo couldn't get away with on eMpTV these days. Is Puffy...

OJ Held Without Bail on 6 Felony Charges

Nearly 12 years after his infamous acquittal in the criminal trial in which he was charged with murdering his ex-wife and her beau, OJ Simpson is locked up on multiple felony charges. View Simpson's in-custody status / charges (.pdf). This time there was no Brentwood stakeout, no Ford Bronco, and somewhere in heaven Johnnie Cochran isn't the least bit surprised. Friday he was questioned, earlier today he was booked, and tonight, ordered "held without...

Oscars Red Carpet: How to Get a Bleacher Seat

The 80th Academy Awards (host: Jon Stewart) aren't until February 24 but starting today you can register for a chance at a bleacher seat overlooking the red carpet. Thousands applied for 300 spots last year along the 500-foot-long red carpet, but you're feeling lucky, right? The chosen voyeurs will be randomly selected next Monday at noon, and notified in March. Submit for up to four tickets per person. http://www.oscars.org/bleachers/ Dangerous Liaisons devotees look for...

The Week in Weeklies

LAist scours dozens of LA metro weeklies and highlights the best content you may have missed. We read the weeklies so you don't have to. CityBeat gives well-deserved props to 26-year-old Bel-Air native, Alexander Antebi. Earlier this month, Antebi became the youngest, first American, and first Jewish moustache champion in the history of the World Beard and Moustache Championships. Antebi is also the, uh, face man, of LA glam-funkers Conquistador. Still gotta problem with facial...

iPhone Users Go Directly to Jail Store, Collect $100 Credit

Steve Jobs is a very smart and powerful businessman. So did he purposely bite his tongue last week when he announced a $200 iPhone price cut -- just two months after launching the product? Was it a plot to steer additional hype toward the iPhone so the new iPods wouldn't steal all the thunder? Did he plan all along to offer store credit to those who shelled out $600 for an iPhone? Was Master...

Hello Cleveland? Village Voice Media Needs Help

The LA Weekly has been struggling to placate its staff ever since the alt-weekly's publisher, Village Voice Media was swallowed up by not-so-alternative New Times Newspapers nearly two years ago (New Times adopted the VVM name, but not necessarily the flavor). If you haven't witnessed the shift in ideology and coverage in the pages of the Weekly yet, a drastic dip in content quantity -- if not quality -- seems imminent, as the New...

Fredo's Greatest Hits

April 2007 -- Gonzales says, "I don't recall" 72 times at Senate hearing It's Friday! And it's also the final day on the job for Bush-tushy-wipin', habeas corpus trashin', eavesdroppin', worst-AG-ever Alberto Gonzales. Nicknamed "Fredo" by the Commander in Disbelief either because his name is kinda like Alfredo, or perhaps after the weakest Corleone in The Godfather, Gonzales became a Bush Yes-man in the mid-'90s. Gonzales' crimes accomplishments are many. He assisted in obfuscating...

9/12: Channel Surfing the Apocalypse

This excellent mashup inspires essential questions that remain unanswered years later, including: -- What exactly are we fighting for? -- Will these talking heads ever shut up? -- Can you acknowledge Rosh Hashanah on-air without knowing when Ramadan is? -- What song is that killer sample from? -- Where is Osama bin Laden? -- What would Jean-Luc Picard do? and more.... R.I.P. Joe Zawinul

Joe Zawinul was perhaps the most innovative of the creative leaders of "jazz fusion." With Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, and Tony Williams, Zawinul helped shape the very electric sound of Miles Davis' touring band of the late 60's and contributed key compositions to the cornerstone recordings of jazz fusion, 1969's In a Silent Way and 1970's Bitches Brew. Zawinul may be best remembered as a founding member of Weather Report, the fusion...
