The United States Postal Service furthered its efforts to embrace new, green technologies this week, even as these technologies eat away at the USPS' age-old business model of letter delivery. Over the past couple years, the postal service has been employing cleaner energy at some of their plants and experimenting with hybrid diesel-electric alternatives for some of their 200,000 + vehicles. This week, USPS launched a program that allows patrons to pick up postpaid envelopes...

LAist Interview: Jax of Rock Insider and Justin of Aquarium Drunkard at SXSW

We ran into two of our favorite LA-based music bloggers, Justin Gage of Aquarium Drunkard and Ashley Jex (Jax) of Rock Insider at SXSW last week. LAist at SXSW: Moby on Licensing, Veganism, and His Early Career

Capping off four days of panels at SXSW's 2008 Film Festival, (which also included Mark Cuban interviewing Michael Eisner, and a conversation with Billy Bob Thornton), Doreen Ringer Ross of BMI interviewed Moby. The meat of the interview is posted above and concerns Moby's take on licensing music for film (and the concept of mobygratis) as well as a look at his unlikely rise from a punker on Manhattan's lower-east side to a corporate...

LAist Interview: Jonathan Coulton at SXSW

We caught up with Jonathan Coulton after he participated in a live taping of the Heather Gold show, an experience he blogged as well, without noting the more relevant details -- he sang a duet of Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta" with Gold reading the lyrics from an iPhone and then sang Billy Joel's "Don't Ask Me Why" with Harvey Danger's Sean Nelson. We had a couple minutes (before running out of hard drive space)...

Trent Reznor is a free man. He also produced and performed on Saul Williams' excellent free-or-$5 downloadable. Ghosts I-IV is Nine Inch Nails' seventh...

KPCC Drops the Oh-aRe-Gee; Earns Our Pledge; and Thanks

Last November we put out a desperate plea to 89.3 KP-CC to go e-z on the O-R-G. In the new year, however coincidentally, we've noticed a near-total abolition of this redundantly rhyming spellin' lesson for Luddites. In early January, we thought it was a dream. One by one -- Julian, Mantle, Stoltze and Xaykaothao -- all starting throwing around "dot org" as if they finally believed that most of us have a degree from an...

8 Wounded at South LA Bus Stop; Gunman Flees

An innocent victim meeting a stray bullet is not a completely unexpected occurrence in any of the regions detailed on the LAPD's gang injunction map (view the PDF). But it is not often that bullets are sprayed on an unsuspecting crowd (of mostly kids) at a bus stop at 3:15 on a sunny Wednesday afternoon, which is what occurred earlier near Vernon and Central in South LA. Three girls, ages 10, 11 and 12, and...

Found in LA: HOPE on Sunset Blvd.

To see how this giant poster got here, check poil11's flickr. Shepard Fairey's Obama print appeared on the side of this building in Elysian Park over the weekend. Perhaps the "hope" message will serve as much-needed inspiration for the Dodger Stadium tenants around the corner (except, of course, on the three June dates when Obama's beloved White Sox visit Chavez Ravine). Read LAist's latest campaign coverage here....

Shepard Fairey's Studio Moves to Elysian Park, Gallery to Open in April

Shepard Fairey (left) with Dericc Swinfard of Monster Media Inc. Swinfard printed and delivered the super-sized image pro bono. After discovering a massive Shepard Fairey-designed Obama print off Sunset yesterday, we went hunting for the background story, which led straight to the artist himself. The giant billboard (at 1331 W. Sunset) in question marks the location of Fairey's new HQ: Studio Number One with the soon-to-open Subliminal Projects gallery on the first floor. Shepard...

No Suprise: 'No Country' Wins Big at the Oscars

Ethan and Joel Coen, aka the Coen Brothers took home the biggest prizes at tonight's Academy Awards for the film "No Country For Old Men." It wasn't even the best film they've done but then again, Herbie Hancock. Jon Stewart ran the show as he did last year but could do no wrong with Regis Philbin there in the wings. You really want commentary? Visit our 2008 Oscars Liveblog. Hate the Oscars? Check out what...

Post Oscars: Jimmy Kimmel is Fucking Ben Affleck

HD Format Wars: Why Toshiba's Loss ≠ Sony's Win

Sony's Blu-ray high definition video disc won a contentious, expensive, and possibly over-hyped video format war reminiscent of the VHS v. Beta battles of yore. The "battle" for dominance of the next-generation DVD market was determined over past few weeks as major studios and big box retailers sided with Sony's Blu-ray, essentially shutting Toshiba's HD-DVD format out of the market. But who really wins here? The studios and retailers manage to force consumers to go...

The Slaughterhouse Video That Led to the Largest Beef Recall in U.S. History

In late January a video documenting the mistreatment of cattle at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. in Chino was released the Humane Society. The media (LAist included) was sensitive enough to leave this video on the rack but that didn't keep government officials from investigating and announcing the largest beef recall -- nearly 150 million pounds -- in U.S. history this weekend. This video contains footage of inhumane treatment of animals...

Funny, But NO: Rejected Valentine's Day Cards

Think Valentine's Day is for suckers? Afraid of sending the wrong message by giving Valentine's cards (or by failing to)? You can still run out on your lunch break but chances are you won't find any cards as perfect(ly inappropriate) as this collection from Hallmark's Shoebox division. Because transparency (and quite often romance) in the workplace begins with a YouTube channel and a self-mocking blog....

Map: How LA Voted in the Democratic Primary by District

View Larger Map Hillary Clinton beat Barack Obama by a similar margin in LA County as she did in the state, and by significantly greater...

Ron Hubbard Way. | All photos by Tony Pierce The global day of action was initially announced last month after a video attributed to "Anonymous" coincided with an online effort that managed to temporarily knock out Internet servers belonging to the Church of Scientology. Wake Up LA: Foxy's

Foxy's carne asada chilaquiles run you $12 but you'll stay fed for days | All photos by Andy Sternberg for LAist In spite of the greasy mess plate of hungover love pictured above, Foxy's in Glendale is far from your last resort, still-drunk brekkie-plate of mornings soon to be forgotten. No, no, no. Last Sunday when we rolled up the Brand Boulevard of Cars and took a left onto Colorado and another into Foxy's...

Found in [Greater] LA: Jobing for Prophet

Jobing.com: Employment for Bad Spellers | Photo by Andy Sternberg for LAist This billboard has been bugging me for months and it's all over LA. WTF is "Jobing?!?" Surely it's more than just a website designed to capitalize on typos of the unemployed. But what is this Jobing Community of Greater Los Angeles all about anyway? Is it community in the Eco-Village sense? Is there a secret society that worships the prophet Job? Do...
