BAM! ZONK! KAPOW! There's a Batman Run Downtown!
Your favorite billionaire with a crime-fighting superhero side hustle is getting celebrated in Los Angeles at the DC Batman Run—and you're welcome to join the party. The Caped Crusader turns 80 this year, and to commemorate him, Warner Bros. and DC Comics have organized a 5K nighttime race through Downtown Los Angeles.
Batman came to life in 1938 in Detective Comics #27, as a way to introduce a new superhero and to capitalize on Superman's success. In 1940, young sidekick Robin and tech-savvy butler Alfred joined in, which helped boost the popularity and granted the Dynamic Duo their own comic book series.
In celebration of those 80 years of superhero greatness, Warner Bros. and DC Comics are pulling out all the stops! The family-friendly event kicks off at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, where participants can pick up their bibs and enjoy Batman-themed folly such as carnival games, contests with prizes, and signature selfies with the Batmobile and other iconic items, such as a life-sized LEGO Batman. You're also able to shop for Batman-themed clothes and gadgets, as well as collect free swag from event sponsors.
At 6 p.m., the race begins, as runners make their way through the course, which includes a fog-filled Batcave tunnel.
As the sun goes down and the darkness envelopes the city of Gotham—er, LA—the Bat Signal will light up City Hall at 8 p.m. Then the true party begins, where revelers can enjoy a live concert from '80s cover band Flashback Heart Attack, food trucks and beer garden (21 and older only).
Registration costs $59 and it's recommended you sign up early, because spots are limited. Racers will have access to professional photos, a limited edition 80th Anniversary Batman T-shirt and commemorative pin, as well as a Batman finisher's medal. Register for the 5k here.
And if you can't make it to this one because you'll be tied up by villains (or some other much more reasonable excuse), you can do the "virtual" course by running a 5K anywhere else at any time, and still get the commemorative items you so deserve.
