This Baker's Collective Is Fighting Depression, One Dessert At A Time
Depression is notoriously difficult to talk about, but one pop-up dessert shop is starting a dialogue with baked goods in Beverly Hills this Saturday.
Depressed Cake Shop, a pop-up baker's collective working to raise awareness about mental health issues, will serve its signature sweets at Baby Bea's Bakeshop in Beverly Hills this Saturday, October 7. All proceeds from the day's sales will be donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), allowing you to feel altruistic during your inevitable sugar crash.
The Depressed Cake Shop concept, in which artists create unique, gray-scaled baked goods with a pop of color to visually represent what it's like to live with mental illness, has traveled far and wide since it was founded by U.K. public relations expert Emma Thomas in 2013. Depressed Cake Shop came to Santa Monica last year to raise funds for St. Joseph Center’s Mental Health programs in Venice, and has collected over $100,000 for mental health organizations worldwide.
From "Prozac cake" to storm cloud-gray macaroons, Depressed Cake Shop's treats are intended to bring attention to the fact that approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience some form of mental illness in a given year. The process of creating Depressed Cake Shop's goods has proved therapeutic for many of its bakers who have personally struggled with depression and other forms of mental illness.
Depressed Cake Shop's pop-up at Baby Bea's Bakeshop will be presented in collaboration with Sweatpants & Coffee, and will feature treats from local bakers including Cake Wars winner Viki Kane of Just A Little Dessert Co. and Stephanie Chen of Sugarbear Bakes. If you don't have a sweet tooth, Sweatpants & Coffee's plush #AnxietyBlobs and a variety of other merch will be sold at the pop-up.
Depressed Cake Shop will be at Baby Bea's Bakeshop on 311 South Robertson Boulevard, Beverly Hills, this Saturday, October 7. The pop-up will open at 10 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m., or "until the last cake is sold!" More information can be found here.
