This Dining Series Takes You Through The Different Eras And Architectural Styles Of L.A.
Love dinner parties, immersive performance experiences, and Los Angeles' wide-ranging architecture, but don't know how to combine it all? PlaceSetting, a new pop-up dinner series from the creator of Disco Dining Club, might be just the thing you're looking for.
Courtney Nichols, the party producer behind DDC, and her partner Gabriel Cappelli, a chef who has worked in the kitchens of The Edmon and Saint Martha, held the first PlaceSetting event last month at their home in Mar Vista.
"The house was built in 1947, and it was owned by my grandmother," Nichols told LAist. The night included meals prepared with the appliances of the house, ingredients sourced from the property (oranges from the orange trees outside), and costumes based on the era.
“From a food perspective, we’re trying to make entertaining you the whole focal point of the dinner, highlighting elements of how [people] used to host when the house was built,” Cappelli told Los Angeles Magazine. “Too many times, people do dinners that are based on the chef’s personality or style, and this is very much just based on what was going on and what would be enjoyed by a group of people coming to someone’s house.”
"The idea is to be dinner party anthropologists," Nichols continued to LAist. "So, 'if these walls could talk.' We want people to connect with the plethora and diversity of houses in LA."
PlaceSetting's second dinner party was held at a house in Hollywood built in 1922. "And it's owned by this Swiss man, so we did a sort of Swiss/1920s combo. We had Swiss elements like fondue and a yodler perform after dinner."
The details of PlaceSetting's upcoming event, scheduled for August 10, are still a secret, "but it will take place in Mount Washington. I really want to cover the entire landscape of the city," Nichols said.
PlaceSetting's parties occur every two weeks, and cap at 25 people (though, parties at larger estates may be able to hold more guests). Tickets are $125, and include six to eight courses paired with wine, and specialty cocktails made by Nichols.
"We always want people to have a drink in hand," Nichols says, "and feel like they got their money's worth."
