Bagels And A Natural Wine Shop Are Coming To South Side Of Silver Lake
The mostly residential southeast corner of Silver Lake (side note: is Benton Way or Coronado Street the eastern border of Silver Lake? Discuss.) is about to welcome two new shops to the corner of Bellevue and Occidental.
Bagel maverick Jason Kaplan (whose Maury's bagel pop-up is a fixture at Silver Lake's Dinosaur Coffee on Saturdays, and the Hollywood Farmers Market on Sundays) will be opening an 800-square foot shop at 2829 Bellevue Avenue in the coming months, Kaplan told LAist>. The space will include both a catering section, and a customer-facing shop that will serve drip coffee and bagels.
What's more, Kaplan's new location will put his operation within spitting distance of the newly reconstructed Brooklyn Bagel Bakery on Beverly and Roselake that's set to open this summer. Gladiators, let the games begin.
Next door to Kaplan's new bagel shop, at 2825 Bellevue (same building, neighboring shop), an outfit calling itself Psychic Wines is planning a wine shop. Zachary Nathan Jarrett (of Cosa Buona) and Quinn Perkins Kimsey-White (who spent three years at Oakland's Ordinaire before arriving in Los Angeles) filed for the beer and wine license with the city on June 1.
"We're hoping to break ground by the end of the month," Kimsey-White told LAist. "And then we're aiming at a late autumn opening." He added that the shop is 1,100-square feet, with about half devoted to retail, initially, of natural wines. "On down the road, once we're more established, we want to apply for a [more expanded] beer and wine license so people can open a bottle and drink there for a small corkage fee."
As Eater adds, the building housing the two upcoming shops and a salon was built in 1926, and had formerly hosted El Criollo Market.
"It's a great location," Kimsey-White told LAist. "We see it as an opportunity to carve out an enclave of our own and set the mood."
Here's to hoping we won't be calling this area SoSiLA (South Silver Lake) anytime soon.
