Southern California Just Broke The Record For The World's Longest Pizza

Congratulations Fontana, you are now home to the Guinness World Record for the "Longest Pizza in the World."

The groundbreaking feat was accomplished Saturday at the Auto Club Speedway, when a 1.3 mile-long pizza—held up on aluminum scaffolding—was made along the outer rim of the racetrack. Given the impressive size of the pie (if we can even call it that), pictures from Saturday's event struggled to capture the true scope of the behemoth:

As for how the pizza was made, a mobile oven had to be carted around the racetrack, spewing a delicious trail of dough, sauce and cheese in its wake:

As noted at LA Weekly, there were a few parameters that the organizers had to work with. For one thing, the pizza had to be at least twenty inches in width—the approximate diameter of a large pizza. Also, the end result had to stretch over 6,082 feet and 3.4 inches long (about 1.15 miles) to beat the previous record that was set in Naples, Italy in 2016.

Another restriction: food regulations in the San Bernardino County say that cooked food can not be left out in room temperature for more than four hours—while volunteers for the Naples record took eight hours to bake their pie, planners out in Fontana worked with a tighter time frame.

At around 4 p.m., the pizza crossed the designated finish line, and a Guinness World Records "adjudicator"—dressed in suit and tie—made the record official.

According to the Fontana Herald News
, the resulting product was made of 8,000 pounds of dough, 5,600 pounds of sauce, and 3,600 pounds of cheese. Close to 2,000 spectators came out to check out the event; they were given some of the pizza to sample, but the majority was donated to local homeless shelters and food banks. Here's what the aftermath looked like:

The event was devised by a pizza oven distributor called, what else, pizzaovens.com— ultimately, 23 companies and 200 volunteers were involved in the project.

Now that Southern California has dominated the Longest Pizza game, what's left for us to conquer? May we suggest the world's largest scoop of ice cream (3,010 lb)? Or the most layers in a sandwich (60)?
