Highly-Anticipated Rossoblu Features Its Own Butchery And Pasta Room

Rossoblu, the latest restaurant by chef Steve Samson, and one of the most highly-anticipated openings of the year, is now serving at downtown's City Market South. Samson also owns the much-lauded Sotto.

The restaurant is a tribute to the cooking of Samson's mother and grandmother (“cucina della nonna”) and his childhood summers spent in Bologna, Italy. The menu is rich in specialties of Italy's Emilia Romagna region: Tortellini in Brodo, black cod Bolognese, and milk braised pork. Samson will also produce much of the sausages and salumis in-house in the downstairs Butcher Box room, and make Rossoblu's pasta al matterello (or by hand, with a large rolling pin) in the adjacent Pasta Room.

Expect a large selection of wines (both Italian and Californian varieties) by wine directors Jeremy Parzen and Christine Veys, as well as plenty of sparkling red Lambrusco wines. Sotto's Brynn Smith will be directing the bar program, and will highlight Italian spirits in the cocktail menu.

Rossoblu, and City Market South are part of the larger City Market development (which will take 25 years to complete, and is poised to remake downtown's entire Fashion District). Rossoblu is already joined by neighbor Cognoscenti Coffee, and will soon add San Francisco's Slanted Door, as well as a new cocktail bar by Steve Livigni and Pablo Moix.

Rossoblu is located at 1124 San Julian Street in Los Angeles. (213) 749-1099. The restaurant is closed Monday, open Sunday, and Tuesday through Thursday 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday through Saturday until 10:30 p.m. Reservations can be made here.
