At the start of every year we’re told to let go of the past, but thanks to Hollywood, we have no choice but to relive 2016 for the pomp and circumstance of the Oscars. The outcry of last year’s #OscarsSoWhite was heard on some level, it seems, by the Academy’s voting committee; even though La La Land dominated with 14 nominations (tying for the all-time record with All About Eve and Titanic), black-led features like Fences and Hidden Figures were also recognized for their critical acclaim. Moonlight, with its all-black cast, portrayed a stunning and achingly vulnerable vision of black queerness set in 1980s Miami, garnering the film a well-deserved eight nominations. If you haven't made it to a theater to see the nominees in their purest form, your general laziness will still be rewarded, as many of the films are available online to stream, purchase, or pre-order.
