Cronut Inventor Dominique Ansel Will Open His First Los Angeles Restaurant
You may have had a cronut, but did you have an official Cronut®? So far, the pastry hybrid as imagined by New York's Dominique Ansel has only been available to Angelenos via limited pop-up affairs. But now, the West Coast's time has come: Ansel is opening up a restaurant in Los Angeles, the L.A. Times reports.
Ansel opened his first shop in New York in 2011, followed by locations in Tokyo and London. When the London shop opened in October of 2016, a queue of some 200 people formed outside, salivating for pastries... and to this day there is still a line outside of his first NYC shop.
Los Angeles will be his fifth location. Spokesperson Amy Ma and PR director Jessica Cheng tell LAist that this will be Ansel's first full-service restaurant, and the largest of all of his shops. The restaurant will have seating for all three meals of the day, as well as a brunch menu and cocktails. It will also contain a bakery, of course, where customers can grab Cronuts, cookie shots, frozen s'mores and other Ansel creations. Some of the items will be exclusive to Los Angeles.
“Every time I visit L.A., I find myself going to different neighborhoods, often quite far out of the way, just to eat," Ansel said via a statement. "So I’m grateful to have the chance to open a new concept in a city where food is so much a part of its culture. One minute you can be in one neighborhood having incredible Korean BBQ, the next you’re driving over to Little Ethiopia, or finding a new taco truck somewhere late at night. The saying that people in L.A. don’t eat is most definitely not true.”
Ansel has been looking around for a spot in Los Angeles for the last three years, and will finally settle in and open his restaurant here towards the end of 2017, though it's not yet clear where, exactly.
