After winning big at the Golden Globes, La La Land, Damien Chazelle's love letter to Los Angeles and Hollywood, scored 14 Academy Award nominations, tying a record set by Titanic and All About Eve. But there's no possibility of a sweep: The film has two songs nominated for Best Song.

Other critical darlings—and indie box office successes—Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight were also honored with multiple nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Screenplay (Original for Manchester, Adapted for Moonlight), as well as their actors (Manchester's Casey Affleck was nominated for Actor and Michelle Williams for Supporting Actress; Moonlight's Mahershala Ali was nominated for Supporting Actor and Naomie Harris for Supporting Actress).

Mel Gibson capped off his comeback by winning a Best Director nomination for Hacksaw Ridge, which was also nominated for Best Picture and Actor (Andrew Garfield). Besides Garfield, the Best Actor nods were to frontrunner Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Denzel Washington (Fences) and Viggo Mortensen Captain Fantastic. Sorry, Sully.

Isabelle Huppert's big Golden Globes win for Elle translated into a Best Actress nomination; Ruth Negga (Loving), Natalie Portman (Jackie), Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) and Emma Stone (La La Land) were also nominated. Notable absences are Annette Bening in 20th Century Women and Amy Adams, who starred in both Arrival and Nocturnal Animals.

The searing documentary from ESPN, O.J.: Made in America, was nominated for Best Documentary, as were Fire at Sea, I Am Not Your Negro, Life, Animated and Ava DuVernary's Netflix documentary, 13th.

And it seems, at least this year, #OscarsSoWhite is less of an issue: Seven of the 20 acting nominees are not white (Denzel Washington, Ruth Negga, Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali and Dev Patel); Hidden Figures and Moonlight were both nominated for Best Picture; and three of the documentaries (O.J., I Am Not Your Negro, 13th) deal with the African-American experience with Fire at Sea is about African and Middle Eastern refugees.
