Where To Get Cheap Drinks On Repeal Day
December 5 is Repeal Day, which marks the end of American prohibition. It was on December 5, 1933 that Utah ratified the 21st Amendment, thus securing the three quarters majority needed to repeal the 18th Amendment. That unfortunate amendment had gone into effect in January of 1920, spawning a legacy of bootlegger flicks and speakeasies. Several local watering holes will be offering deals, including $1 cocktails, in celebration of our right to drink responsibly.
TART, located inside the Farmer's Daughter Hotel on Fairfax, will sell you a $5 mule made with the spirit of your choice (vodka, tequila, whiskey or rum). The special begins at 4 p.m. and lasts until chose.
TART is located at 119 S. Fairfax in Fairfax, 323-556-2608.
All 1933 Group bars will be offering $1 drink specials between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. These locations include Idle Hour in North Hollywood, the Highland Park Bowl, Harlowe in West Hollywood, Sassafrass in Hollywood, Bigfoot West in Culver City, Bigfoot Lodge in Atwater Village, The Thirsty Crow in Silver Lake, Oldfield's in Culver City and La Cuevita in Highland Park. Most of the bars are offering a $1 Old Fashioned, though La Cuevita, fittingly, will be doing a tequila press.
BOSSCAT KITCHEN & LIBATIONS
The Museum of the American Cocktail presents a lecture with historian Richard Foss on Prohibition and its lasting effects, plus you'll get a meal with five different craft classic cocktails. Costumes of the 1930s variety are encouraged, and there will be prized for those deemed the best of the bunch.
Richard Foss is MOTAC's California curator, as well as the author of Rum: A Global History and Food in the Air and Space. Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door.

This includes The Pink Slip—Russian Standard vodka, agave, lime, strawberry, cucumber, jalapeño—and the Honey Badger, made with Bulleit Rye, honey, lemon and bitters, among others. These drinks typically go for $13, so you do the math. And if you stop by for happy hour (5-8 p.m.), you can take advantage of food specials as well, including $1 oysters.

R Bar, one of Koreatown's best watering holes, will have a brandy punch for $5 a glass and a special cocktail called The Japanese for $10. The Japanese is a classic concoction featured in Jerry Thomas' How to Mix Drinks (1962) made with cognac, orgeat and Angostura bitters. It is surmised that the name has little to do with the ingredients, but might have been named after Tateishi Onojirou Noriyuki, a Japanese samurai diplomat who possibly drank at Thomas' New York bar. A jazz band will be in the house from 8 p.m. onward. Don't forget to look at R Bar's Facebook page to get the password!
R Bar is located at 3331 W. 8th St. in Koreatown, 213-387-7227.

The stunning cocktail bar has a $1 Havana Club Puerto Rico punch, which we're told will be fruity with a hint of oak and vanilla. The specials begin at 5 p.m. and last all night.
