Glendale's Gorgeous Park Over The 134 Freeway Could Actually Happen
There are no shortage of plans to “cap” SoCal freeways by building parks on top of them. There are two proposals to build parks over the 101 in both Hollywood and Downtown. There are proposals to build a pair of caps in Santa Monica over the 10, and in East Los Angeles a lid over the 60 Freeway could rejoin the two halves of Belvedere Park separated when the road was first built.
But none of these plans have much momentum.
To find one that does, we have to look to Glendale and its idea to cap nearly one mile of the 134 Freeway. Dubbed Space 134, Glendale’s motion to build a park above the parkway has been in development for about three years, according to Streetsblog L.A. Now, this week, three Glendale City Council members are in Texas, visiting Dallas to see that city’s own freeway cap, according to the L.A. Times.
Glendale’s cap would be built in phases. The first one would build a 24-acre park over the freeway between Brand Boulevard and Central Avenue in downtown Glendale. If everything goes according to plan, construction could begin in 2020, according to Curbed L.A.
Following the first phase, titled “The Heart,” Glendale would build a 0.5-mile long extension, titled “The Soul.” Aside from just park space, the freeway cap would hypothetically include a slew of public amenities, like a children’s park, a botanical garden, a concert space and maybe even a restaurant.
Before moving forward, however, Glendale needs to conduct a year-long feasibility study, to determine what exactly would be needed to move forward. As of now, city officials are looking for both public and private sources of money, and are interested in seeking donations, as Dallas did, when the time comes to build.
For the most part, Glendale residents seem to support the idea. A survey held last year among Glendale residents revealed about 75 percent support the idea.
And for good reason. The renderings below, produced by the landscape architecture firm Melendrez—incidentally the same firm working on Long Beach’s Terminal Island Freeway Teardown project—reveal what looks like a befitting addition to Glendale’s downtown area.
