18 Of Our Favorite Brunch Spots In Los Angeles

Weekend brunches are relaxing treats, a time to hang out with friends and lovers, and an excuse to drink before noon. Ideal brunch spots have the perfect combination of delicious food, a chill atmosphere and decent coffee. Below are some of our favorite spots, including neighborhood hangouts, flavorful fare from dives and indulgent Sunday splurges. In a city as brunch-rich as Los Angeles, we couldn't possibly put all of them on our list, so feel free to leave your favorites in the comments below.

While the sultry interior of Toca Madera is perfect for a suggestive evening dinner or date, their brunch game is also a strong one. Their sunny and secluded patio is the perfect place to sample their sweet and savory options over a cup of coffee, a bold Bloody Maria or a refreshing cocktail. We're fans of the Churro Chicken and Waffles that combines crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside fried chicken with their sweet, fluffy, cinnamon-spiced waffles. Rich honey butter, maple syrup and hot sauce complete the dish. We also enjoyed their chilaquiles—short rib or chicken machaca with crisp corn chips, avocado tomatillo sauce, scrambled egg, caramelized and pickled onions, cheese, cilantro and crema—and for lighter fare, one might sample their fruit bowl or Barrio Crudite—pineapple, jicama, mango and cucumber with fresh lime juice, chipotle powder and sea salt. Cocktail-wise, the But First, Coffee is the perfect choice for those who can never decide between caffeine or alcohol at brunch. Vanilla-infused El Jimador tequila, Stumptown cold brew, Caffe Lolita and cinnamon make for a slightly sweet, flavorful drink.

Trois Familia is the third restaurant venture among A-list chefs Ludo Lefebvre, Jon Shook & Vinny Dotolo. It's the more laidback counterpart to their high-end Trois Mec and Petit Trois locations, and it's fitting since it's located in a strip mall in Silver Lake. The best part is this homey spot offers French-meets-Mexican brunch seven days a week, at a rather affordable price point. There are so many mouth-watering items to choose from, but we highly suggest their Chicken Milanese—a heavenly, lightly breaded, crispy chicken topped with ribbons of thinly sliced cucumbers and radishes, and covered in ranch. Also, a must-try is their potato mousseline: the buttery and creamy mashed potatoes are topped with colorful flower petals, but the best part is it feels as if you're opening a present when your spoon digs into the dish and you find a poached egg and chorizo jam. —Jean Trinh

Ox & Son's brunch/lunch service is a relatively new addition to Santa Monica's Montana Avenue, and it's a worthwhile one to check out. Chef Brad Miller is playful and creative with his dishes, doing everything from a deconstructed Banh Mi Breakfast Bowl with coconut sticky rice and house-made sausage, to a Crispy Chicken Sandwich with all the fixin's—meaning kimchi slaw, a chili honey sauce, white cheddar and smoked aioli. Wash that all down with their refreshing blood orange mimosa while you're at it. The staff is friendly, the space is bright and cheery (with gorgeous plates), and the food always takes you on a new culinary adventure. What more can you ask for? —Jean Trinh

This Culver City spot has an open, clean, industrial interior and a street-side patio. They change their menu seasonally and use a lot of local ingredients, serving brunch from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the weekends. If you feel like starting sweet, they've got a fun Coffee & Donuts option which includes three donuts and an espresso anglaise. Otherwise, we suggest the french toast. This changes depending on the season, and it was pumpkin spice the last time we went. On the lighter side, they have a number of morning salad options with optional grilled chicken or seared salmon. But if you take brunches as cheat days, we suggest the Pork Belly Tartine, served with a poached egg and hollandaise over a house-made, flaky English Muffin. They've also got a great mushroom hash made with roasted peppers, potato, bacon marmalade and eggs made sunny side up, as well as a well-spiced chilaquiles dish with chicken, salsa rojo, spiced crema and queso fresco. Cocktail-wise, you can't go wrong with a Bloody Mary, but we like their inventive Early Ace—London dry gin, earl grey, lemon and pistachio foam.

Every time we go to Sqirl, we carve out a couple hours out of our day because we know we're going to have to wait in a long queue—but it's always worth it. Chef and owner Jessica Kaslow has managed to win our hearts every time with her crispy rice salads, burnt brioche toasts topped with house-made ricotta and jam, and those oh-so-buttery and flaky biscuits that only get served on the weekends. Plus, for the coffee snobs, they've got some high-quality roasts on their menu—from 49th Parallel to George Howell. While they have some seating inside, we always opt for the outdoor seating because it's a great spot for people and dog-watching. —Jean Trinh

Looking for a place to celebrate or impress your friends? Wally's in Beverly Hills is not only a place to buy wines, cheese, truffles and other gourmet items, but they also do an indulgent brunch. For $48, you can enjoy two brunch courses and a glass of NV Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label or another breakfast cocktail. The lighter first courses include a truffle potato salad, avocado toast or our favorite, blacked yellowfin tuna loin paired with grilled pepper lime yogurt, roasted tomato and iceberg lettuce. The heartier second courses include twists on traditional breakfast items. There are the duck eggs, soft scrambled and truffled, that come pressed onto grilled rustic bread with chicken sauce. You can also get a hearty slab of grilled pork belly, which comes slathered in basil-green tomato jam, with fried eggs and hash browns. Their flavorful flatbreads are also easily shared with others, our favorite being their Carbonara: poached egg, shaved mushrooms, fontina and pancetta. If you want to really feel indulgent, you can get the French toast. It's a hearty slab of buttermilk caramelized French toast with berries, a maple creme and a slab of seared foie gras on top.

L.A. Rose Cafe is a little gem tucked away in East Hollywood. This old-school spot (with stellar service!) whips up Filipino breakfast like nobody's business. It's the kind of eatery where you can get a regular ol' stack of pancakes or spinach, mushroom and cheese omelet if you're a brunch purist. But it's also the type of place where you can get mouth-watering pork longanisa sausages served on a plate with sunny-side-up eggs and garlic rice, or chicken adobo with the same sides. You should also always say yes to the cafe's empanadas, which are served with a house-made sweet mustard sauce, and make room for their Filipino desserts that include pandan and ube. —Jean Trinh

R Bar is a fun place, with DJs, karaoke or live music nearly every night of the week. Its spacious red-hued interior makes it a perfect casual bar for a few drinks with friends, but they recently started opening up early for brunch. They have a solid $5 menu of light breakfast combos, plus a cheap a la carte menu. We recommend the charro beans with eggs, or the curried hash browns. Heartier dishes include breakfast burritos, french toast and biscuits and gravy. Their drink menu includes sangrias, Bloody Marys and a sweet iced coffee cocktail that will leave you caffeinated and a little tipsy. Or, if you order $10 worth of food, you can get bottomless strawberry margaritas for $20. Expect oldies and '80s music, an upbeat staff and an unfussy environment at this Koreatown joint.
R Bar is located at 331 8th St. in Koreatown, 213-387-7227. Brunch is available on the weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The number one reason to hit up this Marina Del Rey brunch spot is the view. Gaze out over the marina and watch the boats go by as you dine on a small, but well-rounded brunch menu that includes scrambles, french toast, pancakes and eggs. We liked the Spanish Scramble—eggs, roasted asparagus, le quercia prosciutto, oven-roasted tomatoes and Parmesan served with roasted potatoes—and their thick, chewy French toast, served with fluffy eggs and crispy bacon or fruit and creme. Those not in the brunch mood can also peruse their lighter fare options that include oysters, a Japanese Hamachi, sandwiches and soups. If you're looking for a refreshing breakfast drink, we like the SALT, made with Dobel Maestro Tequila, hibiscus, Averna and lime with a chili salt rim, or the refreshing Rosemary Martini made with rosemary vodka, cucumber, lime and mint.
SALT is located at 13534 Bali Way in the Marina Del Rey Hotel in Marina Del Rey, (424) 289-8223. The breakfast menu is available Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Poppy + Rose
Poppy + Rose is a sunshine-filled, cheery spot with communal seating that serves American comfort food and breakfast all day (and one of our favorite breakfast burritos). Their menu frequently changes with the season, though you can expect some savory dishes like the rib tips breakfast burrito—ribs, eggs, cheese, hash browns, bbq sauce, greens and house creme fraiche—and the buttermilk fried chicken and waffle with smoked honey butter. Lighter fare includes yogurt, steel cut oats and fruit or the Poppy Grain Bowl, which consists of quinoa, carrot pickles, cucumber, mushrooms, buttermilk fried onions and a poached egg. They offer coffee, espresso and cold-pressed juice as well as a few pastries for those on the go.
Poppy + Rose is located at 765 Wall St. in downtown Los Angeles, (213) 995-7799. You can get breakfast Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Fratelli is a pleasant neighborhood spot, where you can get simple and fresh fare. They have breakfast burritos, from the simple egg, salsa and cheddar one called "The Baldwin's," to the heartier "The Everly's" with eggs, turkey bacon, tomatoes, potatoes, mushrooms and green onions. They also offer waffles, French toast, croissant sandwiches, crepes, omelets, scrambles and the popular Shakshuka—slow roasted tomato, black pepper and garlic over topping two over-medium eggs. Many dishes here can be made vegan. You can also score a smoothie or something from their coffee and espresso bar on your way out.

This rock star of Los Angeles' restaurant scene makes its mark alone with its dining space, occupying the old Campanile building on La Brea Avenue and resembling what Jonathan Gold calls a "medieval banquet hall." And while the dinner menu prices cater more to the residents to the east in Hancock Park, the 20-somethings in the Miracle Mile apartments across the street to the west can get a taste of Walter Manzke's kitchen with the more affordable weekend brunch menu. The menu leans French/Mediterranean and you can find all the usual brunch suspects on it, but a few diversions (notably the shakshouka and kimchi fried rice) and an extensive house cocktail menu make it worth waiting in the notoriously long lines. —Carman Tse

The Sycamore Kitchen
It's debatable whose pastry counter is the best in Los Angeles, though Karen and Quinn Hatfield have a leg up with their own take on the kouign-amann, which they call the "buttercup," a buttery and crispy delight that's a sort-of predecessor to the cronut. The rest of their menu ain't no slouch either, with souped-up versions of all-American counter eats, like their roasted turkey sandwich with cherry mostarda and camembert cheese, or their creative selection of chopped and chicken salads. Our only complaint: the breakfast menu is available only until 12:30 p.m. on weekends, meaning some of us who enjoy sleeping in don't get to indulge on the pork belly hash. —Carman Tse

We love every branch of the Zoe Nathan and Josh Loeb empire, and their modest brunch spot is no exception. Their farm-to-table ethos permeates practically every menu item here, with not just the fresh fruits and vegetables sourced from the nearby Santa Monica Farmers Market, but also the eggs and meats. Green Eggs & Ham (made with prosciutto and pesto) and the delicious duck confit hash are standouts on their reliable brunch menu, but the real winner is Nathan's pastry lineup. Yes, there's the oft-praised maple bacon biscuit (which always sells out by noon), but don't forget their blueberry cornmeal cake or the prosciutto-Gruyere croissant, so fragile that using a knife to cut it would spoil its integrity. —Carman Tse

For years, this reliable East Hollywood brunch destination has been luring the hungry and hungover masses with their decadent brioche French toast and their sizzling skillets of baked eggs with chorizo. And the deliciousness doesn't stop there. Whether you're starting the morning right with one of their house-baked scones or going big with the Benedict, you won't be disappointed. Though you may have to wait in line for a bit, once you settle in to the cozy dining room or laid-back patio, you won't want to leave. And if you happen to head over to Echo Park for a stroll or a leisurely paddle boat ride, you can hit up Square One at the Boathouse for a slightly smaller—yet no less tasty—selection of brunch bites. Plans are also in the works for another location over on Hyperion, but you may want to get in line for that one starting now as it will likely be no less popular. —Danny Jensen

Earlier this year, Top Chef alum and Knife Fight winner, Nyesha Arrington began offering brunch-goers an excellent new brunch (and dinner!) option in Venice. While at first glance some of the dishes may sound like your typical weekend morning fare, creative and flavorful dishes take unexpected twists. There's the not-to-be missed Korean Latka, a tribute to Arrington's Korean grandmother that uses house-made kimchi and the stellar brown butter pancakes with whipped coconut cream and sea-salt vanilla butter. You also don't want to miss out on the Coctel Mixto, a seafood bowl with a spicy tomato-watermelon just topped with chile-dusted rice paper or the soft shell crab -loaded California Benedict. Leona also offers a great selection of bubbly brunch cocktails, wine and craft beer. With a breezy and cozy beach-adjacent patio and a bright and airy vaulted interior, you're likely to lose a few hours here. —Danny Jensen

This Silver Lake stalwart offers a stunning, Ewok-village-like tree-covered patio to wile away the brunch hours, while chowing down on some top-notch fare. You'll definitely want to kick things off with their house buttermilk biscuits and a potent brunch cocktail, including their newly launched punches, which includes the mezcal-based Smokey Piñas Punch and the gin and green juice-inspired Captain Planet. Then, if you lean towards the sweeter side of brunch, you'll want to check out the lemon ricotta pancakes and/or the brioche "bread pudding" French toast. For heartier fare, the shakshuka—a spicy tomato base, topped with eggs and feta—and the pork belly hash and fried chicken are perfect for getting you in the mood for a post-brunch food coma nap. —Danny Jensen

Leo & Lily is a picturesque Woodland Hills favorite serving up European-Mediterranean, made-from-scratch dishes including pastries, homemade granola and heartier favorites such as the Italian Omelet—eggs, mushroom, broccolini, spicy Italian turkey sausage, asiago cheese and bruschetta—and the almond-crusted Whole Wheat French Toast with with greek yogurt orange cream and maple butter. They've also got a Mediterranean Benedict with crispy duck prosciutto. And to start, you can order a bread basket that comes with feta cheese, butter and house jam. Bonus: they have an outdoor patio.
