Photos: The Wildly Bizarre Costumes Of The 'Beach Goth' Music Festival

By Annie Lesser

Now in its fourth year Beach Goth has become more than just a fun event put on by Orange County band The Growlers, it's now a full on music festival with a vibe unique unto itself. With over 50 bands from various genres and eras performing over the weekend at the Observatory Grounds, Beach Goth had a most eclectic lineup of any festival its size this year. They featured Wanda Jackson, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Julian Casablancas, together Pangea, The Aquabats, Grimes, Juicy J and Parliament Funkadelic. The lineup was so eclectic in fact that the second night of the fest when Pauly Shore was on stage introducing The Growlers for their second set of the weekend and he said the woman in costume next to him was Cyndi Lauper, there were audience members who thought the woman was actually the '80s icon.

What makes Beach Goth truly special is the environment that The Growlers have created. With art installations in both the artist and general admission areas, live Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings each day, beach areas with actual sand, and a costume encouraged environment everyone fully embraces Beach Goth as a magical place unto its own. Two women at one point started a game counting how many psyche shirts and how many masks they saw to see which there was more of, but they quickly lost count.

This weekend we documented the fest through portraits of artists, our favorite costumes, and the truest beachy and gothy parts of the fest.
