One Man Killed In Early Morning Shooting On Venice Beach
One man was killed and another injured in an early morning shooting on Venice Beach.
LAPD officers responded to the 300 block of Ocean Front Walk, near Rose Avenue, just after 2 a.m., Sunday morning after reports of shots being fired. When they responded, they found two men shot, one of which died at the scene after paramedics tended to him. The other, a man in his 40s, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. According to ABC 7, the shooter approached several homeless people sleeping in front of the Hotel Cadillac on the boardwalk and asked them to leave.
"It appears now, at this time, that this incident was triggered by some sort of altercation here on the boardwalk between locals which escalated," LAPD Sergeant Barry Montgomery told reporters, according to KCAL. ABC 7 says a gang reference may have been mentioned before the shooting took place.
The gunman got away from the scene in a dark-colored SUV going southbound on Speedway, according to witnesses. He was only described as a Hispanic male.
According to KTLA, the man killed in the shooting was man in his 20s known as "Shakespeare." His friend Mariah Magomedova, with whom he lived on the streets with the past few months, said he was a "good and kind person" who was also helping her get off the streets. "I was petrified because that was basically fellow homeless activist," Magomedova told KCLA. "He was a humanitarian."
Police say they will be collecting surveillance footage from local businesses as a part of the investigation.
