16 Excellent Bars For Outdoor Drinking In Los Angeles
Los Angeles offers us so much beautiful weather year-round, it would be a shame to waste all that sunshine and those cool breezes by drinking indoors. That's why we've spent many important research hours to bring you the best bars for outdoor drinking across the city, so you can make the most of your plein air cocktail hours. From dizzying rooftop views to hidden backyard patios, here are our favorite spots for imbibing in the great outdoors.
PREUX & PROPER
This slick New Orleans-inspired downtown spot offers two patios—one just above the other—where you can sip on reimagined NOLA cocktails like Hurricanes, Sazeracs, Juleps, and Old Fashioneds. They also provide an extensive wine and beer selection, including the Big Easy favorite Abita beer on tap and a selection of colorful daiquiris, perfect for washing down po'boys, oysters or crispy frog legs. Head to the downstairs patio for the daily happy hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., or take the party upstairs and take in the view from the balcony patio. Just leave your beads at home.
Preux & Proper is located at 840 S. Spring St. in Downtown L.A., (213) 896-0090
ZINC CAFE AND MARKET
An oasis in the Arts District, Zinc Cafe offers a spacious, olive tree-shaded patio with plenty of seating for al fresco drinks. Spend a sunny afternoon or warm evening by the outdoor fountain enjoying creative aperitifs and cocktails crafted just inside at Bar Mateo, which feature neighborhood-inspired names like the gin-based 4th Place. They also feature a great selection of craft beers and mostly California wines.

If you're searching for a sprawling patio in the heart of Hollywood, look no further than this rustically modern spot where cross-hatched wooden beams offer an indoor-outdoor vibe. Cozy up by the fireplace on brisk L.A. nights, saddle up to the outdoor bar window or grab a table for a glass of barrel, draft beers or specialty cocktails like the Nor Easter with Maker's Mark, ginger, maple and lemon.
Madera Kitchen is located at 1835 N. Cahuenga Blvd. in Hollywood, (213) 261-3687
Grab a drink in Caribbean-style on Roy Choi's breezy, island-inspired patio that stays true to the restaurants name. The cocktail menu leans heavily on rum and tropical flavors with updated classics like the Frozen Piña Colada or the Dry Harbour with pot still rum, lime with an absinthe habeñero pineapple shrub. The bar offers plenty of selections for wine drinkers and a paired down beer list with the requisite Red Stripe.
Sunny Spot is located at 822 W. Washington Blvd. in Venice (310) 488-8884
THE RED LION TAVERN
This charming German beer garden, excuse us, biergarten has long been a Silver Lake favorite for outdoor drinking, especially during the day. Order up a half-liter, liter, or-if you're very thirsty-a two-liter boot of classic German beers, including Warsteiner, Bitburger, Hofbrau and Spaten. You can also order from their full bar offerings, which includes a variety of German schnapps, in addition to wine and cocktails. If you ordered a giant pretzel or a sausage platter with your drinks, we can bet no one at your table will be disappointed.
The Red Lion Tavern is located at 2366 Glendale Blvd. in Silver Lake, (323) 662-5337
Regardless of where you fall on the idea of vegan Mexican fare, the stunning patio and impressive tequila and mezcal offerings at this WeHo joint are likely to win you over. From a Big Lebowski-inspired spiked horchata to the brightness of a kiwi-citrus-tequila blend of La Quinceñera, there's plenty to keep you occupied beyond classic margaritas (though, those are great, too). Head straight for the less-crowded outdoor bar or wait for a table or picnic bench on the large, brick-tiled and white-walled patio, which centers around a welcoming hearth.
Gracias Madre is located at 8905 Melrose Ave, West Hollywood, (323) 978-2170
After sitting mostly vacant for decades, this giant-barrel-shaped historic bar has been revived by the 1933 Group as a stellar destination for imbibing indoors and out. The large back patio centers around a well-lit ficus tree and offers plenty of seating to sip reworked classic cocktails on draught, craft beers, and beer/shot combos. And if the massive barrel-bar wasn't enough programmatic architecture for you, the patio also features a replica of the original Bulldog Cafe from the Petersen Auto Museum—a big, pipe-smoking pup—which serves as a private event space.
Idle Hour is located at 4824 Vineland Ave, North Hollywood, (818) 980-5604
The weekend scene at Bungalow might be a bit crowded, but it's hard to resist the hip, rustic charm of the lantern-lit patio at this over-sized beach house. Order up a cold beer or farmer's market-friendly margarita at the outdoor surf-themed bar and grab a seat on the eclectic mix of cushioned couches or hearth-facing deck chairs, or challenge your companions to a ping pong tournament. You just may want to get there early to beat the crowds and enjoy the sunset with an ocean view.
The Bungalow is located at 101 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, (310) 899-8530
BOW AND TRUSS
Equal parts Spain and Southern California, the warm and laid-back vibe of this North Hollywood patio bar makes for a great drinking destination on a warm evening. Bow and Truss offers a wide selection of Spanish-accented craft cocktails, reasonably priced draughts, and of course, plenty of wine and sangria to go around. And if you stuck around for their solid tapas or paella, we could hardly blame you.

UPSTAIRS BAR AT THE ACE HOTEL
While Perch and The Rooftop at the Standard are both great downtown bars with a bird's-eye-view, the Upstairs Bar at the Ace Hotel—one of the newest kids on the block— has really won us over. While not as spacious as its counterparts, the bar's patio offers incredible views of downtown and surrounds you with ornate art deco flourishes while you sip craft cocktails from atop the former artistic home of Chaplin, Pickford, Fairbanks and Griffith. Nightly events include DJs, live bands, pop-up shops and other activities, while liquid refreshments include international twists on classic cocktails and an extensive beer and wine list. There's also a small pool, a fireplace, and plenty of Moroccan-themed nooks where you can unwind.
The Upstairs Bar at the Ace Hotel is located at 929 S Broadway St, Downtown LA, (213) 623-3233
A Hermosa Beach secret—until now—the patio of Abgaile overlooks the neighborhood's main drag and offers the perfect retreat for catching an amazing beachside sunset. While in the past the 1920's era building may have been home to a church, a rehearsal space for Black Flag, and a steakhouse with a mechanical bull, the latest revision offers an excellent selection of craft beers made in-house by former Stone brewer, Brian Brewer (seriously, that's his name). In lieu of beer, you can also choose from refreshing cocktails from scratch like the house-infused vodka and ginger beer of Simons18 or a well-balanced wine list.
Abigaile is located at 1301 Manhattan Ave, Hermosa Beach, (310) 798-8227
VERANDA BAR AT HOTEL FIGUEROA
This boutique hotel has been an alluring destination for travelers and locals alike since the '20s and now a $30-million renovation aims to restore the current Moroccan-theme to its former Spanish Mediterranean grandeur. Until then, head to the Veranda Bar in back to sip cocktails, wine and beer by the incandescent pool. Surrounded by succulents and blooming bougainvillea vines, you're likely to forget you're right in the heart of downtown. And be sure to hit up their daily happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., where you may just catch the poolside taco cart.
Veranda Bar at Hotel Figueroa is located at 939 South Figueroa Street, Downtown LA, (213) 627-8971
The multi-leveled, Ewok-village-style patio of Cliff's Edge is a Silver Lake institution for brunches and date nights. Whether you're sipping blood orange mimosas on a weekend morning or nursing a farmer's market-fresh cocktail in the evening, the extensive branches of the massive tree centerpiece make for a great hideaway to lose a few hours. In addition to their well-considered cocktail offerings, you can also opt for an international offering of beer, wine and high-end spirits.

THE PUB AT GOLDEN ROAD BREWING
The folks at Golden Road managed to capture the breezy vibe of a neighborhood park on the patio of The Pub, while offering the added bonus of excellent craft beers brewed just next door. All are welcome—including dogs and kids—on this mostly-shaded astroturf lawn where large picnic tables encourage a communal spirit. Order from their extensive selection of 20 revolving taps, which includes limited-run specialty beers and guest brewers, and then try your hand at foosball or grab a growler to go.

The back patio of The Eveleigh offers a bungalow of refuge from hustle of the Sunset Strip. Select from a variety of farm-inspired seasonal cocktails, a huge small vintage wine list or share a punch bowl with friends. Whether you see the twinkle of lights in the distance of the shrubs or soak up some rays when the canvas shades are pulled back, there's not a bad time of day to be spent at the back bar.
The Eveleigh is located at 8752 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, (424) 239-1630
DOCKSIDE AT PLAYA PROVISIONS
While there are plenty of great options for drinking and eating at Playa Provisions—an intimate whiskey bar, a small batch ice cream stand and a market counter for take out—if you're in the mood for drinking with an ocean breeze, you'll want to head straight to the back patio of Dockside, the high-end dining portion of this beachside favorite. A carefully curated cocktail, beer and wine list, as well as an impressive whiskey offering, make for plenty of great options to enjoy on the patio where wide windows allow for stunning sunset views, while high walls and fire pits keep you warm on cool nights.
