Over 40 Sick After Eating Bakery's Hallucinogenic Drug-Laced Bread
Over 40 people went to the hospital last week after complaining they were nauseous, hallucinating and having out-of-body experiences after eating Three Kings bread from an Orange County bakery. Well, it turns out that the bread was laced with a synthetic drug.
The traditional dessert, which is also known as Three Kings cake or Rosca de Reyes bread, is eaten on Jan. 6 to celebrate the religious holiday Three Kings Day. Orange County Health Care Agency closed Cholula Bakery in Santa Ana last Wednesday after the store's customers became ill from eating the bread, reported NBC Los Angeles. The bread had also been distributed to different stores throughout SoCal.
"The only common denominator with all these patients is they ate this Three Kings bread in celebration of the holiday," said Santa Ana Police Department Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
At first, the agency closed the bakery over a cockroach infestation after they investigated the situation. After health officials tested the cakes and found that there was a synthetic drug in it, they contacted police, who opened a criminal investigation. It's not clear yet which drug was used to spike the bread.
Customers, which included people as young as 4 and as old as 60, also complained of dizziness, heart palpitations, anxiety, and dryness of mouth. One woman even fainted.
While authorities are investigating, they're keeping Cholula Bakery closed until the store is completely cleaned, the ingredients used to make the cake are tossed out, and the staff gets proper training on food safety.
