Harbor Patrol Officer In Catalina Killed When Boat Crashes Into Rock During Storm

A harbor patrol officer died after getting crushed between a boat and a rock during an intense windstorm on Catalina Island Tuesday night. Another man's body was also discovered in the choppy waters.

The officer, whose name has not been released yet, was fatally injured around 11 p.m. at Avalon Harbor, according to City News Service. The Avalon Fire Dept. described him as a man in his 30s. The L.A. County Coroner's Office told NBC Los Angeles that the officer fell off a boat as he and crews were helping other boats that were "in distress."

Authorities found another body, a man in his 50s, floating in the waters around the same they discovered the officer's body. He was taken to a hospital where he died, reported The Press-Telegram. His name has not been released yet either, pending notification to his next of kin.

The L.A. Times reported that wind gusts were blowing at 40 mph that night. Boats had tumbled over and the waves were rough in the waters.
